2nd Trimester

Anyone experiencing mild depression?

I have a great husband who loves and supports me and I honestly feel like this pregnancy is the greatest gift I've ver been given - but I still am having a lot of trouble being "happy". I constantly worry and don't seem to be enjoying life lately.

Re: Anyone experiencing mild depression?

  • Have you spoken to your ob about this?

I'm sure it's normal to worry and stress but it shouldn't be all the time.

  • I worry and stress a lot.  I've also noticed that I'm MUCH more critical of DH than I've ever been.  It's not every day though so I don't worry too much about it.  If you are feeling upset/depressed whatever every day - I'd talk to your doctor.  If it comes and goes it's probably just anxiousness about the baby mixed in with horomones.

I am the same way with FI. I actually feel pretty bad about it..

  • It could be the beginnings of depression. I am currently on a low dose of Zoloft to keep me "happy" and I would be in a total funk without it!

Mention your sadness to someone (your DH, your OB, your mom, etc) just so there is someone looking out for you and aware. That's the most important thing. If at any time you experience an anxiety or panic attack, or find yourself crying for NO reason (commercials don't count), or wanting to do nothing but stay home and to yourself, not enjoying things you previously would have loved to do- you MUST call your OB.

Depression during pregnancy can be a big contributor to Post-Pardum Depression, which is MUCH worse.

HTH, and if you need anything- your bumpies are always here!

  • I'm sure you're not alone in that.  For me, the hormones seem to have balanced me out for most of the pregnancy.  But I have to admit, I'm not the same person I was prePG.  I'm pretty antisocial and generally not as enthusiastic about things as I think I should be.  Have you ever exprienced depression before?  You should talk to your Dr about it b/c if you decide its necessary, some depression medications are ok to take during pregnancy.  I went off my regular meds completely when I got pregnant but have been told several times that if I feel I need them again, to not hesitate and talk to the doctor about it.

  • Me... big time off and on
  • Yup. I went off my antidepressants 6 months before I started TTC. There are times it is pretty bad, but I make sure to talk to my OB about it. I have meds, but I am trying not to have to start to take them because of the possible risks at birth when you take them in your third tri. But I will definately be back on them as soon as the baby is born because of the high danger of PPD.

Do you have someone you can talk to about how you are feeling? A good friend can help just to listen even if they don't really "get" it.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you all so much for sharing your thoughts, advice and concern- this is really helpful.  Having my "bumpies" to go to is invaluable!

  • I went through about one week or so of crying and feeling VERY down. I was very worried about it and thought it might become a problem. However, one day it just went away... I think it may have had something to do with my resentment toward my dad (long story). Anyway, I just called him and told him how I felt and since then things have gotten better. But it took me a while to really figure out what was bothering me. Maybe there is something you aren't dealing with? I'd say if you can't pinpoint any reasons and it lasts longer than 2 weeks to seek medical help.

Good luck! This too shall pass...

  • I would maybe talk to your OB about it and see what he/she says.  It could be the influx of hormones or it might be that talking to someone about what's happening would help your anxieties.  I was seeing a counselor before I became pregnant, but I have found that being able to talk about my pregnancy worries and anxieties has really helped me to work through a lot of it and not be so stressed out all the time.
