nursery decor--need opinions (again)!

I don't know why I listen to DH...but he's made me all nervous that what I've picked out isn't going to look right (he's done this with almost every room in the house, but then everything always turns out looking fine). Regardless, I need some assurance or for someone to agree with him and tell me I'm wrong ;-)

Here is a link to our furniture, we are just getting the convertible crib and the double dresser (no hutch) in espresso. https://tinyurl.com/cc835c

Here is a picture of the rug:

And here is the problem child. I ordered a white bookcase and DH thinks it won't go because it doesn't "match" the rest of the furniture. But I don't want it to be completely matchy-matchy. And the room is painted light khaki with white trim, so I am thinking that the white bookcase will blend in nicely with the rest of the white stuff in the room. here is a picture:

What do you think?

  • I think it is going to look fine and you can always paint the bookcase if it doesn't go... my DH did the same thing and it all turned out pretty nice..

  • I think that it will look nice.  There is white on the rug, and the white trim will go well with it also.
  • I think it will look great.  I did something similar.  The crib and changing table are espresso, but the wall shelves (we didn't have room for a full bookshelf) are white.  I did other white accents, like white picture frames, to bring a little more white into the room.  I really like having that contrast.

  • Sophie's crib and dresser/changing table are espresso, and I put a white Ikea expidit bookshelf along one wall, and I think the colors go fine together.

    And I love your rug!

  • I like mixing furniture.  We did an espresso crib, bookcase, and wood-framed mirror, and then a white dresser and two white nightstands.  I like the white bookcase, but I would add in another white wood piece of furniture to bring it all together.  I think you need something more substantial that's white in the room than what's in the rug and the white trim.  HTH!
  • Stick with the white bookcase.  I agree that you don't want things to be too matchy.  My DH also thinks that all wood furniture needs to be the same color.  My friend did a white crib and dark finish dresser for her DS and it looked really nice.

  • We did Espresso furniture and a green bookcase and it looks great.  It's far more interesting to have different colors and textures in the room than have everything matchy-matchy.  Plus a lot of the current magazines show cribs now with dual colors (usually and espresso and white or cream) and it looks very sharp.

  • I think the rug will really tie the room together. Love the crib and rug by the way.

  • I actually prefer the white bookcase. All espresso can be boring. If you'd like, put some chocolate baskets or bins in the bookshelf. It'll all flow.
  • i don't think all the furniture should be matchy matchy.

the bookcase will give the room a pop of brightness.

  • Your husband is just wrong Stick out tongue  I think mixing it up will look great, especially since there is white in the rug.

I think this is a really good idea - espresso baskets or something similar in the bookcase would tie it together even more.

  • I love the espresso baskets idea!
  • Thanks, everyone!!

I like the espresso basket idea, too. I registered for some, actually, but I wasn't really sure what I was going to do with them yet if I ended up getting them ;-)
