Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Walkers

Our DD will one 1 next week, and DH wants to get her a walker. I really don't want to get one, plus I don't think she will like it. She hates to be confined. She pulls up and stands a bit, but she would rather crawl to get where she wants to go.

If you used/use a walker, what has been your experience?

Is 12mos too old for a walker?

Re: Walkers

  • What about one of those walking toys that they push?  Do you think she'd like that better?  That would be more of a compromise since you don't really want a walker.  DS has one that's a grocery cart, and he LOVES pushing it around.

Yeah, she got two for Christmas. She will play with it for a bit. Then she sits down and starts crawling again.

  • Is he hoping that with a walker she'll start wakling? Because if that's the case then don't waste your money! She'll have better luck with a push walker. DS wasn't interested in his at 12 months but quickly learned to LOVE it. He still uses it even though he's able to walk.
  • I've always heard that walkers will delay walking.  They are also dangerous.  The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend them.  Ben didn't have one and he started walking at 11 months.  He loves his push toys though.

  • I would suggest a walking push toy instead. IMO she is a bit old for a walker. We got DS one at 8 months and he liked it a bit but could never walk forward. We only use it now for confining DS when one of is not home and the other is taking a shower

This is exactly it. He thinks it will give her motivation she needs. I say she will do it when she is ready.

  • I would stick to the push walkers and walk holding hands w/ her as much as possible. DS2 is just starting to take steps alone (4-5 steps), but we walked with him for awhile w/ 2 hands then he was good holding just 1 hand. He loves his push toys. He used to push them kneeling too. He still does sometimes but now he mostly wants to walk. It'll come.
  • My DD's 1 and she has outgrown her walker. I used the Safety First model from when she was about 6 months to 10 months. Now I put her in it if I don't have the PNP up and need her confined for a minute.

I wouldn't get one, she's probably too big.

  • You are right, buying her a walker is not going to get her walking anytime sooner.  She's getting the practice she needs with the push toys you have, and will do it when she's good and ready.  DS can only walk/push his toys if we help him a little, they go too fast for him otherwise.  But he's already doing so much more than he was a month ago when he first got them.  And he likes to push them on his knees too.  He's a very cautious kid, so we're just being patient and letting him gain some confidence doing it the way he's comfortable with.

  • I've heard bad things about walkers also.  Give her time, she'll probably end up loving the push toys she has.  DD has been walking on her own for a month and still gets a huge grin on her face when she uses her push toys.
