the problem is this.. DH says that Leigh spelled that way is prounced LEE, i disagree but an willing to admit if i'm wrong.

What are some cute ways of spelling the name i want? and when you read the Name "Leigh" did you pronounce it Lay-ah or Lee? TIA!!!

  • Lee... sorry!

  • Leigh is definitely pronounced Lee.  It's just the feminine spelling.
  • I read it as Lee- Maybe you could spell it Laya or Leiya (if you want it more creatively spelled)
  • I've seen it used as a middle name a ton and pronounced Lee
  • It is definitely pronounced LEE.

  • Anytime I see "leigh" as a name or part of a name, it is pronounced {lee}.

I've seen Leah be able to pronounced [lee-uh] or [lay-uh] though.

  • My sisters middle name is Leigh and we pronounce it Lee.
  • Leigh is said Lee.

Leia is Lay-uh (as in the Princess from Star Wars).

  • I definitely agree with your DH that Leigh says "lee"

I have only seen "lay-uh" as Lea.  Maybe Leia, too?  Since lei in Hawaiian says "lay"?

  • Leigh is pronounced "LEE".  If you want "LAY-UH" try Leigha or Lahya.  If you do Leigha, everyone will misprounounce it as "LEE-UH".

    I really like both names!

  • I would say that's Lee. Where do you get the "-ah" in Leigh? I'm not sure how you spell it. Maybe just Laya?
  • Definitely Lee...sorry!  I don't know how to spell lay-ah but i know there is a spelling for it!

  • Leigh = Lee

    Leah = lay-ah

  • I pronounce Leigh as Lee

    Laya or Leia

  • Leigh is definitely pronounced "Lee."

The only way I can think to spell it to be pronounced Lay-uh is Leia (like in Princess Leia from Star Wars).

  • I always pronounce it Lee.

    Laya, maybe?

  • Lee.  For a Lay-ah pronunciation, you are going to have to go with a different spelling.

  • Leigh is pronounced "Lee". Leia is the only spelling I've ever seen for "Lay-ah".

  • Honestly when I read it i pronounced it Lay without the "uh" like sleigh without the "S" LOL

It's a really cute name, what if you add an "a" at the end of it? Leigha

But for some reason Leigha doesn't look right...  Leia looks better.

  • 100% Lee.  Sorry!

  • Leigh = pronounced "Lee"

  • It's pronounced Lee, sorry.  If you want it to sound like Le-ya.  Spell it like this Liya.  It's one of my favorite names.
  • Leigh is "Lee" to me.  Cause it's my and my mom's middle name.  Hehe.

  • That is "Lee"!

But you could spell it Laiya or Laiah or Laeah.

  • Leigh = Lee

for lay-uh, I would do Leia

lol, this was MY logic too! guess we're wrong... lol... Gawd DH is never going to let me live this down... lol

so here are the new options based off of suggestions

    1. Laya Richelle

    2. Leah Richelle

    3. Leia Richelle

Definitely Lee. Why don't you spell it Layah? Laya??

  • I would strongly advise against naming your daughter "Leigh" and pronouncing it Lay-ah.  Your DH is right.  While it's a beautiful name however it's pronounced, she'll be spelling and pronouncing it constantly for the rest of her life.

    Ways to spell "LAY-ah":

    Leia (a la Princess Leia)

    Laiah

    Leigha

Laya (though not sure I would use that spelling)

  • Thanks so much ladies!!! lol. DH is going to be happy i did this... finally he will agree with the bumpers! Now i guess i'll send a mass email out to the family to vote on the spelling. lol. thanks again! :)
  • It's Lee, no doubt. I love the [lay-uh] but really don't like the spelling of Leigh.

I think Leia is a pretty spelling though!

  • Thanks for posting this!  I'm a Leigh and my name is mis-prounounced constantly, so I found it interesting so many of you guys posted the right way to say it (Lee).  People call me "Lay" or "Lee-ah" for the most part, I've even gotten "League" a few times which I never understood.

  • Leigh is definately pronounced Lee.  Leia (as in the Star Wars character) is pronounced Lay-ah.

thanks for replying!! Now i see what my little poopsy would have to go through... that is if we have a girl.... although i'm really hoping for a boy.. i figure its just better to have a name for both... just in case!

  • Could be b/c I'm from Hawaii, but Leigh is pronounced as "Lei" to me... as in "Leighton"
  • By now you know, DH is right!  If you love that name and want to eliminate confusion, go with the spelling of Laya.  I also love Lenaya.
