help me with baby clothes!

Did your baby fit into NB size clothes for very long? And even if they were on the small side (5-6 lbs) would 0-3 have sufficed? Just trying to figure out how much of what size I might need. And with CDing is the size baby wears affected by the CD bulk?

Here's what I have currently:

NB size: 1 onsie, 1 dress, and 4 side snap shirts

0-3 size: 1 dress, 3 side snap shirts, and approx 10 onsies

0-9 size: 3 sleepers (the sleep sack kind with no legs)

Re: help me with baby clothes!

  • it really depends on the brand. ?dd wore carters newborn for 4 months or so before moving to the 3 month size. ?you might just have to feel it out.

  • W. was 8lb8oz and wore NB for 3 weeks.  I bought like 6sleepers and 6 onsies and that is all he had in that size.  We jsut kept him in sleeps 24 hours/day.

After that how fast the grow will make a huge difference.  W was only in 0-3 for like a month but plenty of babies are in it for longer than that.  I would wait to buy anything except a small amount of NB clothes.  YOu will get lots of gifts after the birth.

  • My kiddo was 8-6 at birth and wore newborn for a few weeks (Carter's newborn).  The 0-3 in other brands fit him pretty much right away too although the Carter's 3 month was a bit big at first (but would have been fine).  So far I haven't noticed the diapers making him go up a size.  I did get some onesie extenders though as I could see his onesies getting short.

I'd definitely get some sleep and play (the sleepers with legs and feet) - kiddo wore those all the time (day and night) the first month.  Only now do I sometimes put him in "outfits" and those are usually a onesie and stretchy pants (which work great with CDs).

  • DS was 8 lbs 7 oz at birth and pretty much filled out the newborn sizes immediately.  He wore them only a couple of weeks, moved to 0-3 until about month 2 and now he's nearly topping out the 3-6 at just over 3 months.  Our problem is length and feet on sleepers which he's in nearly 24 hours a day unless we go out or something.  I do think the diapers shorten the length a bit but nor horribly.

For us, onsies were a complete waste.  He never wears them and everyone wanted to buy us short sleeved ones which obviously dont work in upstate NY.  Sleepers are great for us and he'll stay in those probably until the weather gets warmer.

  • I agree w/a pp that it does depend on the brand.  For example, Janie and Jack runs large.  DD swam in the 0-3 month stuff at birth.  Carters runs large as well.  She worn NB sizes in these for at least 2 months.  Kissy Kissy runs small.  She was wearing the 6-9 month sizes at 3 months.  Yes, CDs will impact the size for pants and onesies.
  • Ditto pp - depends on the brand.  Gerber runs really small, so I wouldn't bother getting any NB from them.  Carters runs larger, and DS was able to fit in their NB for around 2 months or so (with his CD's!).

I wouldn't get too much of anything, especially if you have a shower coming.  DS received so many baby clothes as gifts that we've hardly had to buy him anything, although we have purchased a few things that we found we liked and worked well with our routine.
