Breastfeeding

Tired of fighting at feedings

It has been a struggle since day 1 to get dd to breastfeed.  She didn't latch until we came home from the hospital.  She is always falling asleep about 8 minutes into feedings- I try everything to wake her up, it doesn't work.  I met with an LC who said that she is just a quick eater so I didn't feel quite as nervous about her falling asleep.  But, over the past few days she has gotten fussy during eatings- pushing away but then acting hungry and then she is spitting up more after feedings.  She is still active and seems to be getting bigger (growing into her bigger cloths)  it just gets to me every now and then...

  • You're not alone!  DD was always like this.  She was never an easy BFer.  It frustrated me so much!!  But things do get easier.  There are still days now where she is difficult, but over time I learned tricks to make things easier and I try not to let it frustrate me as much as it used to.  I just keep going and try to focus one feeding at a time.

  • ditto pp

we didn'y really get started w/ bfing until 4 wks (several issues forced us to use formula/i kept pumping)

  • Is she uncomfortable when spitting up or arching her back a lot? Keep an eye on it- this is how the reflux started for my guy! He just got put on Zantac. TONS of spit up- for hours after eating, arching away and screaming while eating, fussy after eating and while spitting up...

Just my experience! She may just be trying to tell you she is done!

  • That sounds like our reflux experience too -- started the same way.

  • Same here on the reflux.  Zantac helped us a lot.  I was super frustrated because so many feedings ended with both of us crying.  It does get easier as they get older, though, in my experience.

  • DD did the same thing.  It was so frustrating for me.  She would definitely go through stages with it- we would have a few days where she wouldn't struggle, and then all of a sudden, she would fight me.  I had an oversupply on one side, and that definitely made it worse.  If you've ruled out reflux and oversupply, I would just say it's a phase.  DD hasn't fought me in months and months- it does get so much easier!
  • Oh and ditto pp, I had overactive letdown and DD had reflux so I'm sure that added to all our problems.  But even with both of those solved, she's still a difficult BFer...its just how she is.

  • i had the same thing happen (and still does on occasion).  I think it was either my milk coming out too fast, or not fast enough (i can't feel my let down so i dont know!)

but once he gets on, i talk to him calmly and he actually will chill out and stop fighting me.  it for some reason works

  • I forgot to add that sometimes swaddling ds for a feeding helped when he was just fussy and not wanting to eat.
