3rd Trimester

pediatrician

I have a a pediatrician I was recommended, and I know I want to use their practice. How did I officially make them "mine?" Do I just call them up and say "Hey I want you to be my Pediatrician." or is there more I need to do?

Re: pediatrician

  • From the two I have visited, I was just told once we are at the hospital, when asked to by staff, give the chosen pedi's name.  Then one of the doctors in the practice -- whichever is on call that day/night -- will come see the baby at the hospital.  Then I have 31 days to call insurance and have that doctor made the primary care for the baby.

  • Call and ask if they do Pre-Natal interviews.  Even though they were recommended you should meet and ask a few questions (thebump has some suggestions..I would google it too. Make sure your philosophies are the same and that you know the process for emergencies etc. Some Doc's aren't available on weekends and you'll ONLY get a call center) ..make SURE this is who you want.

Then you let your OBGYN know and he/she will let the hospital know. They may ask you in the hospital who your pediatrician is too...if that person doesn't have "rights" at your hospital then a hospital pediatrician will check your baby before you leave and you'll need to make your first appointment within a few days of coming home.

I just went through this process...Good Luck.

  • I had the same question up until yesterday.  I was also recommended a pediatrician.  I called him up and did a new patient phone interview to ask a few questions and make sure we were a good match.  I asked him how I officially make him my pediatrician and he said that while in the hospital when the staff ask you you simply tell them your pediatricians name and they will contact him (or her) for you.  NoteI made sure this pediatrician was affiliated with the hospital I am delivering at.  So, he already does rounds there about 4 times a week and would be able to see the baby while I am in the hospital.  He would also see the baby approximately one week later in his office.  But, just check out the recommended pediatricians website (if they have one) and also call and chat with them.  I'd ask to make sure about their specific procedures, but that's how it went for me.  Good luck with everything.
  • I name by pedi at the hospital.  It is one of the MILLION of questions that you will be asked.  The pedi on call will look at your baby, but you will be able to pick who you want.

    I hope this helps!
