I feel like I'm the only one whose kid is not ahead/early in achieving dev milestones. At 9 months old, my son is not crawling yet. I saw an earlier post and so many babies were doing it at 6-7 months old, great for them, but where's the late bloomers on here?!
Re: Anyone elses baby not "early" in developmental milestones?
My pedi told me that there's a range for a reason. Every baby develops differently but it doesn't make them "slow".
DS is barely sitting up and is just now doing pushups. We have him in PT to help him but they said it's very common with big babies and that he is developing fine.
It's so hard not to get caught up in it but I also wonder how many people actually tell the truth on here....
lol...first of all, crawling isn't a milestone because tons of babies never do it at all.
secondly...sometimes I get a similar feeling on this board to what I did in college when I realized that I had never met anyone, ever, who got below average on an exam. I mean, half the people have to get below average, right? Most kids achieve their milestones on time, right? Otherwise that wouldn't be the time...
third, it kind of creeps me out when moms talk about their kids milestones like it is their own personal achievment.
The people with early milestone babies are the ones who open their big traps and brag. (I've done it myself--Maddie has been late on all of her physical milestones, but she's an early talker. And I brag about it.)
There are plenty of babies here on the middle and the late end of the range. There's no rush It's not a race.
James is definitely not early in anything! He's just now starting to prop sit for a minute or so... not truly sitting up... no teeth yet (thankfully!), etc. Ironic, since I'm an infant development therapist in early intervention, and helping kids meet dev. milestones is what I do for a living. However, there is a HUGE range for typical development, and 6 months is actually SUPER early for crawling. Typical is more like 8-12months, and the range for walking is 8-18 months! Every baby develops at their own pace, and each tends to have strengths in one area or another... maybe their motor takes longer to come along, but their language is on the earlier side. Don't worry... babies are individuals and they will all meet their milestones in their own time. And if you really get concerned, that's when you call your local Early Intervention!
Raises hand! DS is usually on track but by no means early or ahead. The Pedi has no concerns of him being "slow" so I try not to compare him to others. But he is not crawling yet, barely scooting actually, and he is not "saying" anything yet either- only coos and squeals.
SO you are not the only one!
this. LOL
and "teeth" annoy me more when people use them on milestone threads. teeth are also NOT a milestone.
Thank you for posting this! DD will be 6 months on Sunday, but I've debated just staying on 0-6 b/c she seems to be "behind" most of the babies on that board. She just recently rolled belly to back, still hasn't done (or even attempted) back to belly. She can't sit unassisted, can't tripod yet, and when she's on her belly she is just starting to push up a little.
I know she'll hit everything in her own time, but it is nice to see all the other babies who are a little slower to become mobile! It seems like every day I see so many posts of babies hitting milestones way before mine, and it's good to be reminded that not every baby does things early!
