Question about flying & booking seat ahead of time

We just booked a trip and the airline now charges $12 per passenger to reserve a seat ahead of time.  The plane only has 3 seats across on each side of the plane so the 4 of us can't sit together anyway (DD will be 2, Son will be almost 4).  I don't want to pay for seat assignments, I think it's ridiculous.  They randomly assign when you check in at the gate.  They have to put each of us with one of our kids ... right?  There is no way they are going to put my kid somewhere without me, right?

We also had to pay $15 per checked luggage bag ... it's ridiculous.  Spirit Air.

Re: Question about flying & booking seat ahead of time

  • I saw a post on another message board where a mother and her 3 year old were separated and she couldn't get anyone to switch.  Personally I would pay the money to make sure we were all seated together.

  • Coming home from our honeymoon there was a 6 y/o who was unable to get a seat with his mother.  If DH and I hadn't offered to sit apart and give them our seats the child would have been separated from his mother all the way from Milan Italy to New York.  Unfortunately, the airline often has no control about whether or not seats are available together.  That said, normally some nice other passenger will give up a seat to put a family together.

  • I'm sure someone would switch with you. DH and I swapped with a guy so that we could sit together on our way to our honeymoon. Someone would have to be a major jerk to not let a kid sit with one of their parents.

  • My daughter turns 2 the end of May and we are going the beginning of June.  If no one switches they are going to have fun trying to deal with her.
