1st Trimester

i googled, i checked my books...dumb question

do you actually burn more calories just by simply being pregnant?

i am asking because i haven't gained any weight yet despite eating way more than normal and not exercising....it doesn't make any sense to me.  i am definitely bloated but that doesn't seem to affect my weight either.  any ideas?

  • hm..I definitely think that your body is working much harder when you are pregnant so it could be possible but I don't know. DO you have bad morning sickness?

  • i believe that the average woman needs 300 more calories/day during 2nd and 3rd trimester, same for breastfeeding.  dont think there are increased needs in 1st, and not sure about burning more calories than baseline

only had a few days of nausea but no puking.  also i know i don't need more calories right now but i can't really help myself!

  • My doctor said that the only change a woman who is pregnant NEEDS to make to her caloric intake is the equivalent to an extra apple a day. If you follow the Canadian Food Guide (which is brutally hard to follow) then you will be fine.

I am 16 weeks and I haven't gained much. I can tell from my tops that I am wearing that nothing has changed in terms of my sizing and thankfully neither has my arse.?

  • I don't know the scientific answer or anything, but I think that you definitely do. THink about all that your body is doing the first trimester!? I have been eating a little more I think (and more things that are unheathy ie: whole dairy yogurt, ice cream, etc) and I've even lost weight even though I have quite the belly.
  • i guess i am just slow to gain, i just feel like if i was eating like this and not pregnant i would have gained!  oh well i shan't be complaining Wink

It's actually more for breastfeeding.  You need more calories to breastfeed than to maintain a pregnancy.

  • I know your heart beats faster when PG, so that could make you burn more calories.

I lost weight in my first few weeks, but I also wasn't eating a whole lot and was throwing up. I'm just now starting to gain weight (even though my eating situation hasn't changed).

  • metabolism definitely increases when you are pregnant.

I do not make things up

  • You're burning more calories - you only need 300 extra calories than normal but you don't even need that until your second trimester. ?That's what I've read in one of my pg books.
