big girl bed advice?

We're gettting ready to move dd to a big girl bed as prep for the new baby.  I'm having trouble deciding just what to do.  I've though of everything from buying bunkbeds and using just the top bunk with the rails and storing the second bunk until this one needs it, getting just a regular twin bed for her with a headboard and footboard and rail, doing just a plain twin bed on metal frame and a rail on one side wall on the other, or even just putting a mattress on the floor as she wouldn't get hurt falling out and it would certainly be cheaper!!

Any pro's or con's?

Re: big girl bed advice?

  • I'm very anti bunk beds. (sorry to be a bummer)  I had a pt die from falling off of one last year. so aversion.

dd moved to a full size bed (we had it already) when she was about 21m old.  we started with the mattress on the floor first , then added the boxspring, then when she was 2 1/2 put it on the frame.  she's done well, only fell out once... and she was whining about not wanting to go to bed, not during sleep.

ds is 16 m and we're thinking we'll have to get something soon b/c he's a monkey and he's tearing up the crib. b/c he's so young we're debating between the twin and a toddler. if we do a toddler bed, I'm looking at the extendable bed from Ikea . ???

    good luck!

  • We moved DD 2 nights ago (she's 20 mos) because she climbed out of the crib.

Her crib breaks down to a toddler bed, so that's what we did, plus a bedrail.

If her crib didn't break down, we would have gone straight to a twin bed w/headboard with rails, b/c that's what she'll be in later anyway. (We have a video monitor and can see DD is all over the bed at night, so we know she needs something to keep her in all sides of the bed.)

I wouldn't do the matress on the floor b/c it was hard enough to keep DD in her new bed. But if your DD is older, it might be OK.

  • We are on night #4. Her twin set is on the floor with rails. She can climb out of the end of the bed, but that's fine with us because it means she can put herself BACK in bed too. We have a video monitor and just keep an eye on her.
  • Bunk beds are great...we did this...my son was 2 yrs, 8 mos when he made the move into his new room w/ the bunk beds....the top one does have the rail, but we put him on the bottom one w/ a safety rail that we bought...I think I got the rail at Target or something.  You could just keep them stacked & use the bottom one, too....now w/ our 3rd being the girl, too, we plan to move both girls into the bigger room when they are 2 & 3 & having them take over the bunks....I like the bunk idea....they will last awhile...I like longterm!

  • Get whichever bed set you like.  If it's a twin w/ head and foot board, maybe put it up against a wall and then put a rail on the other side.  We got DD a daybed and have a rail up on the open side.  She's done super with staying in her big-girl bed.  She loves it.
