We have a pedi appt on the 19th, but I was just curious. At what age do you give a meal of solids instead of a bottle? Right now we are still kind of just in practice mode. Practicing with the spoon, getting about half in his mouth and half of the bib. Trying a new food every week. But will he always still drink the same amount of ounces per day?
How often do you give solids if you child is still fairly new to it?
Do you do something like cereal in the am and veggies in the evening? Do you replace a bottle or just give a bit or food before or after a bottle?
Thanks!

I just re-read an article I had clipped from Parents magazine on this topic b/c I was wondering if my DS is getting enough formula. The article said that when your DC consumes enough calories from solid foods to equal a formula or bm feeding.that's when the bm/ff will drop off.
If I remember correctly, it said there are 20 calories in 1 oz of baby food and 25 calories in an ounce of formula or bm. In my experience, my DS reduced the number of ounces of formula he ate when we increased to three solid feedings a day. He consumes about 5 oz of fruits/veggies per day and 4 tbsp of cereal. I think most kids move to 3 meals a day closer to 9 mos in age, but my DS did at 7 mos per the pedi's suggestion (he's a chunker).

Baby 411 states that a solid meal shouldn't replace a bottle/nursing until it is at least 6-8oz at one sitting. This makes sense to me because DD takes 6oz bottles and I would think she'd need at least that.
Your baby will slowly increase solids and decrease bm/ff as you go thru this adventure. It'll happen naturally so you need not worry abou tit, really. Just make sure DC gets his bm/ff above all else and let solids be only supplemental and it'll go well.
We started at 5.5mos so not new at it but we're still only at 6-8ozs total a day between two meals a day. I don't care about the solids as much as I do her formula intake; she's at the minumum for her age group (24ozs total) until she turns 9mos so I need her to stay right there and not go any lower.
I think it's best to give formula/bm first and then solids an hour later. Sure, at first that solids meal will be tiny because they just ate an hour ago but over time they'll adjust themselves and you're still making sure they get the best part of thier nutrition (formula/bm) no matter what.
We feed her a fruit/cereal combo for her first meal and then a meat/pasta/veggie combo for her second.
