3rd Trimester

Low Amniotic Fluid

I posted about a week ago about the doctor telling me I was measuring small.

I had a growth ultrasound done on Friday, and the baby was actually measuring a few days larger for my due date, so I assumed everything was fine.

The doctor called me today to tell me I have to have a fetal heart monitor put on tomorrow because my fluid levels are low.  He also told me that if the baby is compressing the umbilical cord, that they may take her at 34 weeks.  I'm 33 weeks today.  I'm a nervous wreck about there potentially being something wrong with her, and the possibility of them delivering her so early.

Has anyone else received this diagnosis?  What was the outcome?  Any info on complications with a baby born at 34 weeks?

Thank you

Re: Low Amniotic Fluid

  • I was misdiagnosed with low fluid, but I was 39 1/2 weeks.  Because they thought my fluid was low, they induced me, and my progress stalled at 6cm and 100% effaced and she started to show some distress so I wound up with a C-section.

Good luck to you.  I think at that stage it really varies.  Some babies need to spend time in the NICU, while others born around 34 or 35 weeks (hewinked comes to mind) can go to the wellbaby nursery and go home with mom.  Will they be doing an amnio to test her lung maturity?  I would insist upon it.

  • I also have low amniotic fluid, the doctor said in my case it was due to me having PIH.  I am not nearly as far along as you are so they are not considering taking my baby now but my doctor mentioned that I will likely deliver early as well.  In the meantime I was put on modified bed rest and told to drink lots of water (up to 4 litters a day!!!)  Apparently if I am dehydrated it could have an effect on amniotic fluid levels...

A baby born at 34 weeks should not have any major problems.  My brothers were born at 29 weeks and had no complications.  That was 16 years ago!  Good luck, I am sure that everything will go well...

  • To be honest with you, I didn't know they could do an amnio to check for fluid.  They diagnosed me via ultrasound, so I hope it was a mis-measurement.   The doctor said the baby looks fine, so I'm just concerned about the cord compression.

She is so very active (ALL day and night) that I am having trouble swallowing the possibility of something not being right.

They told me if everything is somewhat okay tomorrow, I'll just have to have the fetal heart monitor put on once a week and bi-monthly ultrasounds until delivery...and maybe modified or total bedrest.

I am a physical therapist, so modified bedrest isn't going to be an option for me given the job I do.  I left work early today after the doctor called and I'm not sure I"m going in tomorrow...I need to know everything is okay before I go back to lifting patients all day!

  • I haven't had low amniotic fluid, but DS was unexpectedly born at 33 1/2 weeks. He had a little trouble breathing and eating - needed an oxygen tube for a day or two, and a NasoGastro feeding tube for 4 days (he could suck, but got tired after an ounce or two). He was a little bit jaundiced for a day or so, but not too bad. I was able to BF in the NICU, and the nurses were VERY helpful in getting him to latch, etc. He was in the NICU for 12 days, and was fine when he went home. (oh, we were required to take an infant CPR class before he went home).  He smiled/laughed/talked/walked a few weeks later than other babies, but well within the normal range. He's a healthy little 3 yo now.

I know having a baby early is a scary and worrisome prospect - especially when you're not expecting it. It sounds like you're getting great care, and are being watched closely.  34 weeks isn't TOO horribly early, thank god, and I certainly can't think of anyone who would just take it in stride!

Sounds like you have a bit of preparing to do, which will help keep your mind off things.  Best of luck to you and your little daughter!
