I believe my little guy is hitting the 6 week growth spurt. He is wanting to nurse every 1 1/2 - 2 hours now instead of every 3. In the mornings I've been pumping one side while he nurses on the other to get a freezer stash going (he'll only take one side per feeding) and I had been getting around 4 ounces each time. The last 3 days I've only been getting between 1 - 2 ounces. Is this normal? Will my body catch up and compensate for all the extra nursing? Also, if I'm only getting 1 - 2 ounces does that mean that he's only getting that much when he nurses each time and could that maybe be why he's nursing more frequently, because he's hungry and I'm not producing enough milk??
Re: 6 week old growth spurt and breastfeeding questions!
So a growth spurt is essentially your babies way of telling your body to make more milk. It's a supply/demand process and he's demanding milk more often in order to increase your supply. You're getting less when you pump because your body hasn't caught up to his demand yet, but if you give it a few more days I'm sure it will.
Babies get more milk than a pump, so I'm sure he's getting more than a few ounces when he nurses.
Your experience sounds totally normal to me. Just keep nursing on demand and your body will figure out how much milk to make. :-)
