Question from 2nd tri

Can you ladies tell me your pros & cons of a convertible car seat vs. getting an infant seat and then upgrading later on. TIA!

Re: Question from 2nd tri

  • Infant seat is appropriate for an infant and the safest thing for them. You don't have to wake a sleeping baby every time you get in and out of the car. My kids as infants sleep more when out and about, usually the entire time! You have some place to put them when shopping, out to eat, visiting someone. In the infant seat you will be shocked at how HUGE the seat looks with an infant in it.

We moved to a conv seat with DD was 10 months and she still looked tiny in it.

    She is still rear facing.

  • First- the infant seat is a lot smaller than the convertible seat.  I'm dreading when I have to switch!  It's a lot easier in the beginning to travel with the infant seat.  You strap them in once and then you just take the carrier.  DS falls asleep easy in the car, so I don't have to wake him to get him out of the car.  Not to mention, I really doubt a convertible seat would have worked in the very beginning.  DS was 7lb 8ozs and he looked so small in the infant seat.  He would have been swimming in the convertible seat.

  • Well right now I only have an infant seat but I will be purchasing a convertible car seat shortly.  The infant seat is technically good up to a year but there is no way DD will fit in it that long.  The infant seat was good to have though cause we can take her out of the car and in the store without waking her up if she's sleeping. Plus it keeps her warm during the winter- I don't have to unbuckle her and expose her to the elements. Once the weather is better I plan on moving her over to a convertible car seat cause by then she will be sitting up on her own and can ride in her stroller or in carts w/o the infant seat.

  • So the convertibles dont snap in & out as easily?  I had no idea!

Thanks ladies... appreciate any more opinions that are out there.

  • Sorry about that last post. The convertible car seats don't get taken out with the infant, they stay in the car. So you have to put your baby in and out of the car every time you leave. Plus it is a lot easier with the infant seat to take your baby grocery shopping or anywhere when he or she is really tiny with the infant seat. Definitely get the infant seat.

  • sorry, butting in from the toddler board,

i woudl definately get a infant carrier, i think ours laid back more that the convertible does, and it was so easy to just grab the carrier and take him in the house - esp is he was sleeping.  plus he had somewhere to sit when we went out to eat, church...
