Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Those who have experienced a D&C

What are your experiences? How did you feel the following day(s)?

I don't know anyone personally who has had one, and I'm scheduled for one on Thursday. From what my OB has told me, it should be pretty quick and recovery should be minimal - she said she doesn't even prescribe pain meds, just Motrin & Tylenol.  I've also never been put under anesthesia before, so this of course is making me extremely nervous.

TIA!!

Re: Those who have experienced a D&C

  • I am so sorry. For my D&E I only had cramping while I was in the recovery room, but it was bearable for me. When I went home I basically just laid on the couch and took a nap. My dr. prescribed tylenol #3 and motrin. I think I only took the motrin once. It really wasn't that bad. The worst part was mosltly emotional draining for me though.I hope everything goes well.

  • You feel nothing during the procedure because you are under but just try to relax & take in the gas if that is at all possible. I'm sure they put something in my IV but when I went into the OR they put a mask over my face & just told me to breathe deeply & that was it. It is a very quick procedure but the recovery time is the longest. Some mild cramping afterwards like a period. I had light spotting but some ladies have heavy bleeding. I was given motrin 800 but didn't need them. It's an emotional thing-cried before leaving the house-cried talking to nurse to get dressed because she was a family friend-cried talking to the dr before going in because he asked "are you okay" Well no i'm not but thanks for asking. This also took place on my 1yr anniversary too!

I'm so sorry for your loss but it will be over soon & you can start to feeling better GL to you!

  • it's not that bad. i was really nervous and had never been under general anesthesia before either, but it was basically a breeze physically.  it's not a long procedure -- i was given meds in my IV to put me under and the next thing I knew I woke up and it was over.  The nurses had me rest for a half hour or so and gave me a muffin and a soda and I was on my way home.  the rest of that day i was groggy, but fine.   In the days after, I had some cramping and bleeding.  A few days after, I passed a lot of clots and had some bad cramps, but I still only took motrin so it obviously wasn't unbearable (my dr gave me pain meds but i didnt bother to take them).  Best of luck --- you will be fine!  The procedure itself was a lot easier than dealing with the emotions of it all.
  • My D&C physically wasn't bad at all.  The next day, I felt a little crummy, but not bad.  I didn't have much pain nor bleeding.  I only took the advil because they told me to, not because I needed it.  By the 3rd day I was feeling really good.  Better than I though I would.  If it wasn't the weekend I would have been ok to go back to work on day 3.

ditto here.  the d&c was the easiest part of this ordeal.  I was in more mental pain then physical.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • I think that's what I'm struggling with the most - is that I'm afraid I'm going to be a mess the entire day.  I wish I could just be sedated the whole day so I don't have to be there emotionally.  Impossible, I know.

We had to tell our 7 1/2 year old about everything today.  I think that just might have been harder than learning about the miscarriage myself. :o(

  • The emotional aspect for me was far worse than the physical. I was a mess the whole day, so be prepared for that. It didn't help when I was asked if I was pregnant as I was checking in and when I had to sign a form as the "mother" for what to do with the remains.

Physically, there was cramping and I was uncomfortable, but not too bad.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. Make sure you have plenty of support around you.

  • The others have pretty much said what I would have said... the emotional part of an mc is much harder than the D&C itself.  For me, I was in the hospital at 6:30 AM and out by 11:30.  I didn't have much more than spotting and really no cramps to speak of.  I took a nap when I got home that afternoon (hadn't slept in some time), but felt like myself in the evening.  I would have been fine to go to work the next day (if it wasn't a Saturday).

Good luck and I'm sorry for your loss... I hope you have as easy of a time as I did.

  • I just had my d&c done yesterday. I had been under anesthesia a few times before and for most people it's no big deal. The nurses at my hospital were great and very informative about what to expext. In my thinking, this d&c was the first step of the healing process for my husband and I.  We just found out during an ultrasound yesterday that our baby had no heartbeat and stopped progressing about two weeks ago.  As hard as this is, we're trying to think that this is God's plan for us right now and he will only give us what we are strong enough to handle.  However, I know you know that it doesn't help to take the hurting away right now!  The procedure itself was very fast, only about forty minutes or so to put me out, do the procedure and wake me up to see my husband.  Then I was able to eat some cheese and crackers with some sprite and head home.  I'm sure that your experience will go just fine but let us know how you're doing.  I'm quickly realizing that there are strength in numbers at this difficult time.

    Good Luck!

  • Physically it was not bad at all. The one thing that was unexpected for me is that after six days of light spotting, the bleeding got heavier for a week, then stopped. Good luck I hope you have a quick and easy recovery! I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • physically it was fine.  I was knocked out completely.  I woke up and felt OK.  Emotionally I was a wreck.

I had minimal bleeding and could move around.
