Has anyone used "eco-friendly" paints?

DH and I just spent all week-end arguing & debating about different shades of Behr paint to use in the nursery.  We finally decided and were planning to buy it tonight when a friend of ours highly recommends the eco-friendly stuff by Benjamin Moore.  Has anyone used this?  Any thoughts, good or bad?

*ETA:  The line of paints is called Natura if that rings any bells.

  • We got VOC free paint to redo my high chair from childhood. It was fine, worked just like regular paint.

The rep a the paint store told us we didnt need to spend the extra money on VOC free paint if the room would have a few months to air our before she slept in there.??DH painted b/c i was pregnant and didnt think the fumes would be healthy.

  • That's my concern too.  I'm PG so I'm worried about the fumes.  And I definitely need to help DH with this.  I'm the one who did all the edges and straight lines in our other rooms.  I don't know if DH even knows how and/or has the patience to do it on his own.

I know nothing about the eco-friendly paints sorry.

But as far as painting when PG. My OB said best not in the 1st tri, use only water-based paints (pretty much any interior paint is anyway), and keep the room well ventilated.   I painted several rooms while PG with Abby, and again will paint several more rooms this time around (have already done one). I had no problems.

  • We used the B. Moore eco paint to paint our nursery and guest room when I was pregnant with our first DD. We love the colors and texture, and it went on very easily. Plus, it only took two coats to cover this insanely deep/dark color scheme the previous owner had used. : )
  • We used the eco friendly paint from Sherman Williams. (I think it is called Harmony)  Love it.

  • We used the NO VOC FreshAire paint from Home Depot and it's fantastic. I could not smell ANYTHING the day after we painted the kitchen. Excellent coverage and a nice eggshell finish too. I plan to use it all over the house. It also rated well in consumer reports although it was pricier than other options. I can look up the other paints if you'd like.

Many paints are "low VOC", they have no VOC's until the colors are added. FreshAire is so enviromentall friendly it's ridiculous. The baggie that the paint tint is in dissolves into the paint, so there is no waste there. Even the CAN biodegrades in 10 years =) How cool is that ! Except you know, DH pointed out that people like to save paint which I then told him that if we're still living in this house in 10 years we have bigger problems than our paint can disintegrating in the garage.

  • Taytee, if you're willing, I'd love to know what consumer reports says about these types of paints, and which ones they consider the best value.  Thanks for the offer - that'd be wonderful!

  • My DH bought Milk Paint from Woodcraft, but I forget the brand.  It's really for furniture & toys, etc, though...so I don't know how much that info actually helps you --- but I just thought I'd mention it in case the need arises!

I've got a CR log-in, also.  If she doesn't get back to you let me know and I can email you the reviews.
