WWYD? Need opinions for work situation...

Hi ladies,

I just started my new job a month ago. I knew I was pregnant when I began this job and that I wanted to keep it secret for a while. So I had my 2nd appt. today (lied and said I had to meet a worker at the house), have NT scan next Thursday (they think this is a recheduled derm. appt) and have another routine appt. in a month.

I'm having to come up with lots of fancy excuses to keep leaving work for appts. I look like a slacker already missing so much work in my first month. I had planned to keep my pregnancy a secret until my 90 days trial period was up, but that's two months away. My question is, should I tell my boss at the end of this week that I'm pregnant? It would take a lot of pressure off me, but would I be putting my job at risk? TIA.

  • I don't know for sure, but I think it's illegal to fire you for being pregnant.  It's possible for them to pretend they're firing you for something else, but I think you can fight it or at least threaten to if you suspect it's b/c of the pregnancy. GL!

Thats kind of what I'm afraid of, if they want to find another reason to get rid of me. Like um internet usage, ie-the bump. Can't stay away!

  • I think being honest is always the best idea. Just tell your boss, and hopefully he/she will keep it quiet.

  • Thanks for advice. I think letting the cat out of the bag will take a lot of pressure off.
  • I would just tell your boss, but reiterate to him/her how important the job is to you as well (if it is - if not, then I would skip that Smile)

ha! Work has been about the last thing on my mind lately! But I will use that line anyway. Thanks.

  • In this economy, I'd say do whatever you can not to miss work, as crappy as it is, I know!

Right there with you, I feel so grateful to have this job. These appts. are all during the day, it's a tough situation. The testing center doesn't offer night hours, but my ultrasound/diag. center did, which was so nice.

  • IMAO I would say that it would be best to let your immediate supervisor know so that way he/she won't think that you aren't taking the job seriuosly which could affect whether or not you progress past your 90 day probation. Good luck!!

  • The issue isn't that you are PG and miss work, the REAL issue is that you aren't getting all of your work done. Get into work early, stay late, work through lunch, take work home, etc. Anything to show them you are committed and WILL get the job done.

I always work through lunch, but the staying late doesn't happened b/c I commute by train and the options are few. That being said, I'm sometimes so tired/icky feeling by the end of the day, all I can do is get myself home. THis isn't going to be the job I climb the corp. ladder at, my goals have changed since becoming pregnant.

It is definitely illegal to fire you for being pregnant. I was working as a temp at a place. I had been there 3 months when they said that they were going to hire me at the end of my 6 months there. During my 5th month there, I found out I was pregnant and let me boss know that I was pregnant. Soon afterwards I was told that I would be a liability if I was hired and then didn't come back after my maternity leave. I had no idea whether it was illegal or not, but apparently it's discrimination, just as if they didn't hire me because I was a certain color.

Thankfully this time when i told my boss (different job), she was so excited she jumped out of her chair and gave me a hug. I was so shocked I started crying.

I hope for the best for you. GL!
