I hate my married name

I think it sounds dumb and looks dumb.  I would have kept my maiden name but my H's feelings would have been hurt.

Does anyone else hate their married name too?

Re: I hate my married name

  • Nope, my maiden name was a famous person's name about my age and totally obnoxious. People would always ask me about it. I was so glad to see it go.

  • You could always hyphenate!  Or get him to take your name!  Or pronounce your name differently and with flair!  (Like the Cobert Report) LOL!  Sorry.

  • Yes, no one can pronounce or spell my married name
  • I actually like my married name better than my maiden.  At least most people can pronounce my married name.
  • I loved my maiden name.  It was very melodic and unique.

My married name isn't bad, but most people think that my last name is pronounced like another name for man parts or hot dogs.

  • I kept my maiden name because I hate my H's last name lol

  • i don't necessarily hate DHs name, but i kept my own b/c that's who i am.  i couldn't imagine seeing and signing it with DHs last name!  however, DH doesn't care and even offered to hyphenated our children's name since i like my last name so much.  the only reason i didn't do that was b/c i didn't want them to have to learn to write a huge last name!

my SIL (H's sister) actually got her husband to take her last name.  His mom was adopted and he never knew his dad so he really didn't feel any strong ties to any last name.

Unfortunately, there is only one way my last name could be pronounced.

  • No, I don't hate it, but it's goofy. It rhymes. Kinda like Monica Monaco. We discussed it before we got married, and DH would have been VERY upset had I not taken it, and I do like the tradition.

However, I haven't legally changed it w/SSA and it's been almost 4 years. I only changed it w/DMV, so technically I have "an alias"... Really have to take care of that....

  • I don't hate it, but both names end in an "ee" sound.

  • I went from a maiden name that no one pronounced right to a married name that no one pronounces right. They both suck. I actually tell people to pronounce it like an angry german!
  • I don't think my married name flows the same as my maiden, but I like them both. You could always make your maiden name your middle name or hyphenate.

  • I would have hated my married name, so I didn't change it for that exact reason.

It still annoys DH, and it's caused major issues with his parents that I didn't change it.  Too bad.  I am who I am and I shouldn't have to change my name just because I got married.

  • my maiden name was very common and i was happy to be done with it. ?i love my married name!
  • I don't hate it, but I liked my maiden name better,  We gave DD my old name as her middle name, so that made me very happy.  It was DH's idea from the start.  He knows I changed my name reluctantly.
  • I hate my married name too! When I tell people it, they usually say, "really?.. that's it?" Yes, it's short! Get over it! My maiden name was coincidentally a famous brand name, so I always felt special using it!

  • I hate my married name because nobody can spell it or pronounce it.  I ALWAYS have to spell it!!!!!! Whereas my maiden was very common.
  • My married name is also really short - each name is one syllable so it sounds kind of choppy! ?But, it's also super common so it's easy to spell over the phone and almost everyone gets it right, my maiden name is foreign so people always had a hard time pronouncing/spelling it...I was sad to see it go, so I made it my middle name (I didn't have a middle name before), hyphenating it would have been ridiculously long....

  • My married name is a derrogatory term for the female anatomy.  I hate it, but changed it for the same reason you did.  Sigh.  Oh, and get this, we named our daughter Rose, but everyone calls her Rosie.  I think she may be destined to become a porn star.
  • YES! I hate the way it sounds. DH doesn't like it either and he doesn't like his family. He actually wanted to take my last name. But my dad forbid it.
