Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Night time screaming cries. Nightmares? Advice needed.

DD for the past 2 nights have been waking up at 12 or 1am, sometimes at 5am with loud, screaming cries. During these crying sessions, she seems to be half awake. Being held does not sooth her right away. It has taken 10 plus minutes to get her to settle in our arms during these sessions. We have also tried to let her cry it out a little bit (3 minutes to 5 minutes) after having picked her up a few times before (same night and making sure she wasn't sick) and she goes to sleep after 2-3 minutes of loud screaming. This was not like her previous short, not too loud cries.

We're not sure what is causing these crying sessions at night.

She does not have a fever, nor do we see signs of ear infection. Her upper teeth is out (we can see it now) so I don't think it is teething pain.

We did recently also changed her into her own room. She had been sleeping by herself for over a month in our room (we slept in the guest room) so we can start getting her ready for her own room. She had been doing well and also had no problems sleeping by herself in her own room at her grandparents.

DH thinks it's because DD recently has really "discovered her voice" and is screetching and talking really loud, etc. and that it's carrying over into the night. I'm thinking it may be baby nightmares or the room being unfamiliar (yet somewhat familiar since she's been in that room before it was made into her bedroom).

Anybody's DC have similar crying at night? Do babies have horrible nightmares that wake them up like this?

  • Ben has done this quite a few times in the last couple months.  I chalked it up to teething.  We did some online research about night terrors and from everything I could find, it says that he's too young for them and they don't normally start until around 3.

  • My sister had night terrors for a long time when we were little. She'd scream bloody murder and not wake up, but in the morning she didn't remember anything. Our DD also screams occasionally, but when she does, she doesn't wake up. How old is your DD?
  • DS has started doing this sometimes.  We now wait a minute or two to go "get" him when he wakes up, because sometimes he quiets down on his own.

  • DD is only 8 months old. I didn't think night terrors started so early too. With DD's teeth emerging already, we weren't sure what was going on.
  • my baby started doing this a few months ago too.  He does it about once a week.  He doesn't even open his eyes.  He just screams for a few minutes, then he goes back to sleep.  It doesn't seem to matter if we pick him up or not, and we can't figure out what he would be afraid of.  He does it at night, during naps, in the car...

I am equally mystified about what is going on.

My best guess is baby night terrors.

  • we dealt with this just last night.  It's the 3rd or 4th time it's happened now, and I'm just as clueless as you.  I plan on discussing with her pedi at her 1-year appointment this month.
  • My daughter has said that my DGD (dear granddaughter!) has been doing this also.  Not sure why but at least with so many babies doing it - that it sounds 'normal'.  My DGD has reflux and we chalked it up to a flare up?

  • DS did that on Saturday night. I got up so fast I "woke up" standing at his crib. I picked him up and he settled back down. I mentioned it to my Mom and she said teething too. Last week we had visual confirmation of two teeth.
