I'm still 2 months away, but am starting to mentally prepare because my pedi says she wants Zoe off bottles completely when we switch to milk.
When you switch to milk, how much do they get? Is it the same amount they've been getting in formula? Also, how do you get rid of the last bottle before bed!? I feel like that is going to be my biggest problem. After her bath and jammies she expects to get a bottle to calm down before sleepy time. Would I just give milk in a sippy at dinner instead? I feel like this is gonna be a nightmare! I've tried formula in a sippy a few times and she will not drink it! She actually takes a sip and gags and then throws it and refuses it. I'm hoping when milk goes in it she'll take to it better. ugh! the stress!
Re: when you switch to milk
ok personally I understand where pedi's are coming from but who lives with the child who has to DEAL with the child. YOU DO!!! start with 1 feed at a time taking away the one she enjoys the most away last. angelina just stopped her bedtime bottle when a month ago, it's now in a sippy cup. she still has her paci, I just don't see anything wrong with it at 2 years old, if she were 3 or 4 I get it but 2 she just doesn't need the stress with so many other things about to change in her life and having changed in her life in the last couple months, day care, me pg ...I can't really do much with her right now, getting into a toddler bed, etc....
GL. and yes they get the same oz as with formula and eventually the more solid they eat they will get less and less...angelina takes 2 bottles a day one in the morning when she gets up and 1 before bed 8oz each now.
Yes- this does sound stressful! I didn't realize they recommend no bottles when you switch to milk... GOOD LUCK and keep us posted on how it goes. I'll be curious to hear what you do.
I weaned off bottles a little before a year. I wanted them to be off of them by our trip to Balitmore. I stopped bottles during the day but it took me about 3 or 4 more months before I stopped bedtime bottles. I knew that would help them get to sleep, and when I felt they were ready, I stopped night time bottles all together. They still get a cup of milk before bed, and now they get a 'bed time snack', too. they're used to the routine.
Once Zoe is on food completely, she'll drink less and less milk. I'm lucky if my girls get 12 oz of milk a day. I'm just not strict with it. I give it and if they drink, they drink. Sydney will drink more milk than Peyton... she prefers water. They get lots of calcium through cheese and yogurts, though. Don't be scared if she stops drinking for a few weeks. She'll start up again, soon.
At around 12 months Mikey's pedi said anywhere from 16-24oz of whole milk a day was fine. They should be getting most of their nutrients at that age from other foods, not just their milk. Now at 15 months he should be getting 16oz max and he just about does. Some days he wants more some days he wants less. I haven't measured his milk intake in months now but I guestimate based on how much his cups can hold.
I transitioned him off of the bottle a few weeks after he turned 1. I did it cold turkey and it worked really well. Slowly wasn't working for him especially since he goes to daycare. I couldn't get him to practice enough at daycare so I did it over a weekend and by the following Monday he was good to go with sippies at daycare.
We've never had bedtime bottles so I don't have any advice for that. Mikey has always gotten his last milk of the day around dinner time and that has just continued with his sippies of milk.
I just did this.
I'm not really measuring anymore since there are no measurements on the sippies, but I think it's still the same amount. So far, Alexis is drinking about 24oz a day and she eats 3 meals a day.
I transitioned from formula to milk starting with 2oz milk and 5oz formula in a bottle. After a few days I changed the ratio. I then switched to sippy cups once I was giving her only milk. She hasn't had a problem at all. I think the first 2 times she looked at the sippy cup and questioned it, but drank it. I still give her a bottle before bed and I'll keep doing that for a while b/c I think it's comforting.
i was also told to start sippy's with formula to get her used to it also. she loves sippy cups but i have never done it with formula b/c mady loves to chug her formula lol!
keep me updated...we're right behind ya!
Here is how I did it.
At 11 months old, I began giving Nicky whole milk in his sippy cup at meal times. He liked it right away and drank all of it, so I just cut out the daytime formula feedings. I continued to give him a bedtime bottle of formula until the last can of formula ran out, which was a week before his first birthday. When I attempted to put cold milk in the bedtime bottle, he wanted no part of it and pushed it away. That was the end of bottles.
Since starting whole milk, he drinks 3-4 sippy cups of milk a day, give or take a little more or a little less some days (7 oz each).
My son Maddox is two years old and still gets his bottle before his nap and before bedtime. He drinks his milk and water from the sippy cups during the day and with meals, but that time before bed is a time for comfort and peace. I don't want him to go to bed screaming or upset. During the first few months of getting him to use the sippy cups, he refused them too, repeatedly asking for his bottle, but when he didn't get it. . . I'd leave the sippy cup in his view and eventually he'd go grab it on his own. My pedi did not encourage taking the botttles away at any specific age. When they are ready. . . they'll be ready ( as long as he's not 3 or 4!) but its a process that I just work on little by little. Good Luck!
