Lumpy solid food/ sippy cups

At what age did you start to advance to stage 3 solids? The written recommendation is when they are crawlers and have teeth. So I tried advancing Macy and she puke all her previous food contents from her stomach. I tried 3 different times and each time she gagged and puke. So I am keeping her at stage 2 for now. She also hates the fast flowing nipples. Did anyone just skip the fast nipples and go straight to sippy cups? How did you introduce the cups when they seem to think it's a toy?

  • Well, I made my own food, but I didn't even introduce solids until 6 months, so now way was he eating super lumpy stuff at 7 months.  I wouldn't rush it.  It's probably a texture thing.  We also did not use fast flowing nipples.  He never liked them, so when I introduced a sippy (close to 11 months) it was going from the regular nipples.
  • Stage 1 and stage 2 is not much different except for the consistency. Stage 3 is when you see the lumps. I would try advancing to stage 2 and see if he likes it. You can also try changing the cereal consistency from thin to alittle more clumpy but not too clumpy. If he swallows well with that, then you will be fine with 2. My problem is Macy's has a sensitive gag reflex. She will throw up if alittle piece of paper or food is in her mouth.

  • We are still in Stage 1, but I have been making her oatmeal a little thicker.  And I just moved C to the next step in nipples.  She was using the Stage 1/newborn nipples up until then.  I have heard/read that there really is no reason to change nipples unless they start getting bored b/c it is taling longer to drink their bottle (which is what happen to us).

  • We started stage 3 around 9 months after DD's 9 month appt.  When we first started it, she HATED it!  She would cry, gag, turn away etc.  It really was quite sad to watch and made meal times difficult.  I just kept trying to work it in where I could, trying not to force it, but still be somehow consistently trying.  I'd say after 1.5-2 weeks, she completely got used to it and got the hang of it and had no further issues.  I think it's a texture thing that they have to get used to and it just takes some time.  GL!

  • Pretty much ditto Augustabride..I tried at 8 months I think..major gagging issues, but thankfully no puking, poor Macy! I layed off for about a month and tried again..still gagging issues but not quite as bad and I kept at it and within a few weeks she was OK. Then of course a few weeks after that she didn't want anything out of a jar or off a spoon and we do pretty much finger foods now.
