Are pine cribs not a good idea?

My mother in law tells me that we shouldn't get pine b/c it's too soft and the baby will chew on it and leave marks, eat through it, who knows. (Can you tell I'm getting frustrated with this whole thing) Smile

Does anyone have a pine crib that they can comment on? Would you buy it again? Target has a graco lauren dropside convertible crib for a great price.

Thank you!

Re: Are pine cribs not a good idea?

  • I think most cribs made today (even among expensive brands) are made with pine. I wouldn't worry about it too much; just know that it does mark up easier than harder wood. I think we can all count on our furniture being marked up in some way, whether we try to prevent it or not. I don't think our crib is pine, but it already has cat scratches on it (as well as the dresser) from the cats jumping up and off of the furniture....grrrr. ?

If you put a teething rail on the edge, that will reduce the teeth marks. Our crib won't fit a typical teething rail, but the saleslady said we can get some of that soft clear plastic (maybe pvc?) piping at a hardware store and cut it lengthwise so that it slides right over the rail. Hopefully we can find a solution for us.?

Try not to worry too much about what it's made out of as long as it seems sturdy. Like I said, a lot of furniture is now made out of pine. Sometimes the finish hardens it up some so it doesn't mark up as easily, too.

  • I have the Graco Lauren crib--clearly I don't have a baby yet. But I put it together today...the wood does seem a bit soft, but nothing that surprised me. And it's quite stable once it's all together.
  • I've just heard that the darker stains/black paint will looks the worst because the baby's little bites show more because they can go through the finish and expose the lighter wood color below.  Not to mention that then you might see black paint in the baby's mouth and freak out ;)
