Pregnant after 35

How many doc appts have you had (or will have)?

Hi ladies!  This is my first post over here....

I'm curious as to how many office visits you've had/have while PG.  My H and I are trying to learn what to expect from an insurance standpoint (co-pays, meeting our deductible, etc.)  Do/did you go for a check-up every other week?  Every three? Every week?  How many U/S did you have?

TIA!

Re: How many doc appts have you had (or will have)?

  • Hi and welcome!

This is a tough question... as it really depends on how your pregnancy is going and how risky your pregnancy is.  I can give you my experience with appointments, however, I have thankfully had a very vanilla pregnancy, and haven't needed a ton of extra appointments.

     1.  8 week appointment with U/S at OBs to date pregnancy (no co-pay for any visits as BCBS considers these visits rountine).  Rx for prenatals which cost me $30 month AFTER insurance.

    2. 12 week appointment with no U/S

    3. 12 week NT scan at hospital with bloodwork

    4. 13 or 14 week second blood draw

    5. 16 week appointment with no U/S

    6. 20 week appointment

    7. 20 Big U/S to check the fetus for defects

I think that has been everything. I am not including pre-natal classes etc, and if I forgot something, I will let you know.

  • ?My OB had it all planned out. We started with monthly visits at 6 weeks. Then it became every 2 weeks and then weekly . I had no co- pay for routine OB visits.

U/S were the n/t scan at 12 weeks and then anatomy scan at 18 weeks. I also had a growth u/s due to GD at 37 weeks and then 2 more due to failed non-stress tests. (I was induced after the 39th week and my son is great).

I only had co-pays for my diabetes-related visits to an endocrinologist. I think the hospital delivery co-pay was 100.00. I am sure that your insurer can tell you their policies and limitations. ? ??

  • 7 or 8 week intro appt, 9 week u/s, 12 week appt, 13 week NT scan, 15 week appt, big u/s at 19 weeks, follow up the following week. Should continue with monthly appts for the next few months then move on to bi-weekly appts.
  • Not counting my ultrasounds, which are done at the hospital under the supervision of a Perinatologist, my visits are every 4 weeks until my 32nd week or so. I believe it's biweekly until 38 weeks and then weekly thereafter.

Since my first visit was at 6-1/2 weeks, I was a bit ahead of schedule but will catch up by 24 weeks.

    8 week (Mine: 6w4d)

    12 week  (Mine: 10w4d)

    16 week (Mine: 15w0d on 2/12)

    20 week (Mine: 19w4d on 3/16)

    24 week

    28 week

    32 week

    34 week

    36 week

    38 week

    39 week

    40 week

Ultrasounds were NT Scan (@12 week) and 20 weeks. My insurance had a $30 copay for the first visit and after that all visits are covered at 100% and three ultrasounds are also covered without pre-certifcation. If I need another (I've already had two, one at 10 weeks and the NT) I need Oxford to approve it.

For Labor/Delivery/Hospital stay, my plan has a $2500 in-network deductible and 30/70 after (I pay 30%). There's a $5000 out of pocket max. However, I'm switching to my husband's insurance in May (per his company, it's allowed) and his plan has a $500 copay for hospital stay and that's it. I need him to double check that the cost covers newborn care too.

  • I had my first appt with u/s at 8 weeks and will have the next one, also with u/s at 12 weeks, to do an NT scan and bloodwork. After that I don't know, I'll ask the doctor in my next appt. I imagine they will do a 16 or 20 week u/s after that. My understanding is that they see you once a month up to the last month, when the appts are weekly until you give birth.

  • Oh, and I have an HMO so my first visit was $50 b/c it was considered a "specialist" visit and not technically prenatal. After that my copayments will be $20 a visit. Ultrasounds and everything else are included as far as I know.
