Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tell me about baby powder

We've been using it for every diaper change since I can remember. ?We use the corn starch kind. ?I put a little on my hand & then on his bottom. ?We've never had a problem or a diaper rash.

What's wrong with it? ?I just saw a post about not using it.

Re: Tell me about baby powder

  • BTW- We give DS a bath every night. ?I read somewhere that cornstarch is a breeding ground for germs. ?But if we keep him clean I don't see why this would be a problem?
  • I think babies can breathe it in and it can hurt their lungs.  There is a kind that is not good - maybe the talc kind?  We don't use it - but it sounds like if you put it on your hand first you will be fine.  Every few changes I blow on his bum until it is dry and add some diaper cream with zinc in it to prevent rashes.  So far so good.

  • In our baby care class, they said the danger is that it could get into the baby's lungs.  This is my first baby and I've never used powder.  I know my sis-in-law uses it all the time.  DS has only had a little bit of diaper rash and Butt Paste clears it right up.
  • Don't leave your 2 y.o. alone with it, or else this happens...

  • I'm pretty sure you're just not supposed to let it puff out of the container so they don't breathe too much in.
  • Baby powder is supposed to be an asphyxiation hazard.
  • Well, your baby can breathe talcum powder in and it can possibly cause allergies, lung cancer (when talc breaks down, it is similar to asbestos), or even death.

Cornstarch is a better alternative, but you have to be careful - if your baby gets a rash and it develops into a yeast infection, cornstarch can aggravate and make it worse. Or so I've heard.

  • I have heard the same things about baby powder - babies can breathe it in.  Our ped recommends not using it, so we don't.  For his nighttime diapers, we put a little bit of Aquaphor on DS's bum just for a little extra protection and he's been free & clear of diaper rash.
  • Folan - that is so funny!

Yeah, she is a keeper!  I came up from what I thought was a nap to this... totally naked turning herself into a jelly doughnut with a family sized bottle of baby powder.  I love this kid!
  • my doc said just don't puff it near the baby - but it you want to use it on some fat creases to prevent irritation, you should put a little on your hand (far away from the baby) and then rub it in the crack.  we do it sparingly (whenever they look irritated) and it works like a charm! :)
