Swaddle: Can't live with it, can't sleep without it. :-(

DS HATES being swaddled.  Hates it.  Probably because he wasn't from age 2 weeks to around 8 weeks - when he started this crazy flailing/thrashing/grunting/crying thing - and so we had to bring it back.  It DOES help him sleep - not necessarily longer stretches, just ANY stretches.  The flailing thing was literally waking him up a couple times an hour - now we're back to at least 3 or 4 hour stretches at night.  Which isn't great, but we'll take it.  Sometimes 1 hour stretches when he decides to fight the swaddle hourly in the wee hours of the morning .. argh.  I'm tired.  I can't wait to get RID of the friggin' thing - I feel so bad forcing him into an MB or SwaddleMe at night as he cries - but he does calm down quickly as feed him a bottle, then bounce him and hold him close in a dark room, and then put him down.

But I will be SO GLAD when the inadvertent muscle spasm/thrashing/flailing thing is OVER.

Wheee!

  • Oh - and we have to keep the room COOL if not almost cold - or else he sweats big spots through the swaddle, even in just a diaper or thin onesie.  Fun times.

  • I'm sorry.  Our peanut is NOT a fan either.  She thrashes her way out right away.  In the middle of the night she does it so much- along with the grunty/ squeaky thing that wakes her up.  We have some swaddling specific blanket that somewhere, now I'm thinking I need to go dig it up!

Good luck!  We're super tired too, and only 2 weeks in, so I can only imagine how tired you are feeling.

  • DS is the same at times, and he wants his hands but wakes up if they are out. Lately we let him have one hand out, not his arm just the hand...since it works its way up there anyway. he sucks on it in his sleep and it stops him from trying to get it out.

Have you tried letting him nap with one arm out? maybe if he does that once a day he will stop flailing and waking himself up bc he'll get used to it, My sisters daughter would flail from day one and hated to be swaddled. It sucked but she just let her do it and she got used to it and didnt wake up anymore from it. GL!

  • I LOVE the swaddle. I swaddled both my girls for 5 MONTHS. I'm swaddling DS right now. It helps him from waking every 5 minutes.
