Babies: 0 - 3 Months

getting my four month old to eat cereal....

I just started feeding my four almost five month old rice cereal and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of putting something a little sweet in it to get her to eat. My sister suggested maple syrup...but I'm just not sure about putting something so sweet in her cereal. Thanks!

  • I'm thinking syrup is like honey and you should wait till 1 yr.  But I have heard of people using baby juice like pear or apple to mix with the cereal.  Bananas too.

  • I wouldn't do it - you're not supposed to flavor baby food otherwise they will only eat the sweet stuff! ?Are you adding BM or formula to it? ?That might be a little sweeter than just water and give her something she is used to tasting. ?How long have you been trying?? ?It takes a few weeks for them to get the hang of it. ?Don't force it and just keep trying even if she just tastes it and spits it out.

We just started on rice cereal this week (will probably do avocado next) and my baby pretty much just spits it everywhere! ?Right now it's just for practice...?

  • No way! If she won't eat it, try another single-grain cereal. There is nothing magical about rice. She might like oatmeal better (my son does). If she isn't ready for it, that's a different story. You shouldn't have to sweeten things for her at all. Does your sister even have kids?

  • ?I think I will try another cereal next week if she doesn't eat the rice cereal. Thanks everyone!
  • Please do NOT put anything in your baby's cereal to sweeten it now, other than breastmilk (which is naturally sweet) or formula. Your baby will eat it plain; her palate is a relatively blank slate now. If she doesn't take it now, she's just not ready--not big deal. Babies do not need solids till 6 months--or even older! But please, please do not add maple syrup. If you doubt me (and pp's) call your pedi on Monday and see what he/she says....
  • Wait until 6 months! I had no trouble getting my little guy to eat but it was a few days after his 6-month check-up.?

I was EBF until then but mixed the gerber oatmeal with equal parts formula and he loved it. The intestines mature slowly so there is no reason to rush into solids.

Check out ?kellymom.com or Dr. Sears websites for more ?advice.?

  • The first time that I tried rice cereal with DD, she wanted nothing to do with it - it was at about 4 1/2 months.  So, I waited a couple weeks and tried again, and it was like feeding a different baby - she opened her mouth and ate with no problem!  I wouldn't force it - when  the baby is ready, they will let you know!  My D does like oatmeal better than rice, though.   Maybe try that when you try again.
  • All great advice, thank you. I will skip the sweets. I had a feeling that didn't sound right, that's actually why I joined this website, and board. I knew I needed to ask a few other moms what they did. Thanks for the other website links too!?
