For how long were you able to BF your twins?

Several people have told me that their twin mom friends had to stop BF'ing at around 3 months due to supply issues.  I was hoping to go much longer than that if at all possible.  If you tried to BF and/or pump, how long were you able to keep it up?  If you don't mind sharing, did you stop because of supply issues or schedule difficulties or did it just get too difficult?

  • 4 days - medical reasons with twin 2 that turned into supply issues

  • My kids were born at 30 weeks, and I nursed them until a couple of weeks after their first birthday. I did have to supplement with formula starting at about 6 months, but that was because I had supply issues related to their preemiedom. If they had been born at term I'd still be BFing them (seriously!). Towards the end they were getting more formula than BM, but until they were about 8 or 9 months old they only got 1 formula bottle a day.
  • 3 months - my milk never really came in.
  • I got really lucky and my twins took to BFing very well - plus, I'm super lazy and loved to never have to prepare bottles - so I BFed for 14 months. ?I only had supply issues at about 2 months postpartum, but I took a combination of Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle, and that helped a ton. ?My daughters were born full term, and I am a SAHM - both factors contributed greatly to my success with BFing. ?Good luck!
  • I BF'd/pumped for 3 months and then switched to EP'ing when one DS got lazy and refused the breast.  I never had supply issues, I pumped until they were 6 months and stopped because I went back to work and it was just too much schedule wise.
  • My twins are almost 9 months and I am still BFing.  I hope to make it to a year.  I honestly think it is easier than bottle feeding.  I only went back to work part time and never had supply issues.  Everyone is so different...but I would say you could definitely go longer than 3 months if you want.  Just be sure to drink LOTS of water and get as much food and sleep as possible.  Easier said than done :)
  • My babies are 13 months and I am in the process of weaning right now. ?I have loved nursing them, but there are several reasons why I feel it is the right time to wean.

I supplemented with formula days 1-3 and I haven't used it since. ?I had minor supply issues around 4 and 8 months (teething and an in-law visit gone wrong!), I just ate a lot of pasta and oatmeal and drank more water to get through.

  • Never did - they had latching issues, and were on bottles primarily in the nicu.  I pumped for sevearl weeks but never got more than 1.5 ounces each time.
  • Still nursing with no plans to stop anytime soon. I do add in a formula supplement for my son because he has a weak suck and had some serious issues with weight gain/reflux. Don't let anyone else tell you what you can/can't do... you'll just have to go into it and see where it takes you.
  • My girls were full term and I'm a SAHM. I BF until they were 2. I was fortunate and never had to supplement. I didn't pump either cuz they started refusing bottles at 2 months. I stopped cuz it was time. Smile
  • 9 months.  I had to stop because of work.  I could have kept going!  A lot of us have gone well into a full year!
  • I pumped for 16-1/2 months.  It took about 2 months for my supply to fully come in and I took fenugreek & blessed thistle. I stopped b/c I was tired of pumping all the time.
  • Thanks, ladies!  I feel much, much better.  :)

  • We are at 4&1/2 months and still counting!  I do supplement with a night time bottle and use formula if I go out (no time to pump at this point!).  I set a 3 month goal for myself  - like once we made it past 3 months, I will strive for 6 months, once we hit 6, I'll go for 9 (depending on the teeth situation - they are chomping down already and DD got teeth around 6 months).
  • I just finished weaning - so, 9.5 months.  I stopped because I had mastitis followed by thrush, and thought it was a sign to stop! But I had no problems before that.  I did supplement with formula because I was only able to pump twice at work. I think if I pumped more, I would have had enough breastmilk where I wouldn't have to use the formula.
  • I pumped for a year.  That was my goal and I was ready to stop at that point.  I was able to keep up but just barely.  I never really had any frozen or stored except in the beginning when they weren't eating as much.
