Doing my own CD trial...wanna critique it??

Okay, I have 125.00 to spend trying out CDs. I decided against the Jillian's Drawers Trial because I don't want to do pockets or fitteds, and from what I understand, the green mountain diapers prefolds are the best. What I believe will work best for us are AIOs and Prefolds. I think a combo of the most and least expensive diapers will fit our needs and budget. Here's my wish list. What do you think? Should I avoid any of these or try a different brand? TIA.

  • I can't really critique your personal trial, but I'm curious as to why you decided against fitteds and pockets?  You'll already have the covers for the fitteds, yes?  Personally, I like pockets better than AIOs, because while it's a little more work on the front end (I stuff them as I fold the laundry), the function is pretty much identical to AIO, but it saves time with laundry overall b/c I don't wait forever for them to dry, KWIM?  I'm honestly curious, and hope this doesn't come across as snarky or whatever.

That all said, I can't really critique, because all I've used are pockets and AIO.

  • I'll give you one good reason: DH. He doesn't want to fool with "too many" kinds of diapers. Since the AIOs seemed the easiest, I went with those. I don't really get fitteds..they are just like prefolds, but more expensive and a little less work, right? I would do pockets, but I work and he is a SAHD, and in order to CD, I committed to doing the laundry, so I don't want to add any extra steps for me (stuffing..though I'm sure it's not that hard). I hope this makes sense. Oh, and you don't sound snarky one bit!!

Since you used AIOs, do you have any experience with the ones I plan to try?

  • I borrowed a couple BG sized AIOs recently and I have a few BG3 OS pockets.

My HOA doesn't allow clotheslines, and it took about 2x as long to dry the AIOs vs the pockets, and since I only have a couple, I didn't want to be doing laundry multiple times a day.  I've since ordered more various pockets and some fitteds.  I don't know how they'll work, but I'm hopeful Smile

I think the fitteds are similar to AIO's or pockets in terms of how they go on, but require a cover if you've got a pee-er-through-er or if you're going out.

    Good luck Smile

  • We have a thirsty's AIO and it does take quite a bit of time to dry.  2 cycles to be exact.  The pockets dry WAY faster, even though they need stuffing - it still saves time vs. a whole other dryer cycle. If you stuff them, your DH won't have to worry about them.  Plus, there is the whole cleanliness factor. I feel the pockets get cleaner easier because they come in pieces and the wash gets into more layers.
  • The only AIO we have now is Thirsties. I like it b/c it's trim and we don't have any leaks but it's definitely not night or even nap worthy imo. I could stuff it and maybe get through a nap but I still wouldn't trust it at night.

I tried the organic BG AIO with our trial and liked it ok. Beware though that it takes forever and a day to dry. I can't imagine having a stash full of AIOs. A dryer full would take 2-3 cycles is my guess Tongue Tied

If you decide to go with AIOs (and I'm really not trying to dissuade you, I promise), I would urge you to consider either pockets or fitteds for nighttime. I don't know of any AIOs that are night-worthy. Our stash is equal parts pfs, pockets and fitteds.

  • Hmmm, thanks for the input. Maybe I'll try a pocket diaper in my "trial" as well...and see what works best for us. Thank you!!!

  • I have a little bit of everything in my stash. IMO, the BG OS AIO and Thirsties AIO are NOT night worthy at all. I have a heavy wetter, and the only thing that will hold her is a triple stuffed pocket, and even that isn't always enough. With an AIO (a not stuffable), there is no really good way to add more absorbancy if you end up needing it. The sized BG AIOs are stuffable, as are the Thirsties. But then you'll have to pay extra for inserts, you're still stuffing, and that still may not be absorbant enough. But one good thing about the stuffable AIOs is that you can pull them inside out through the slit and they dry faster.

I know stuffing seems like more work, but I agree it will probably save you time and electricity in the long run.

  • I'm glad you're testing them. And I will come soon to big up the idea to your DH.
