Anyone with Kitties? I had a fright this morning (long)

I woke up at 5am this morning for my ritual pee break (though it was the only one last night and that was heavenly) and when I crawled back into bed (hubby is away this weekend) I used a pillow to block the light coming in from the streetlight through the blinds. I felt something moist on my finger and could see in the dark that something dark was on the pillow. I smelled it of course and it smelled like poop. I immediately turned on the light to find my sheets covered in blood. Okay so as a pregnant woman, I immediately checked myself out as it was really all over the bed.

One of my cats (the littlest one) had been sitting there (trying to drink my water as he does). I looked back at the pillow and it looked like a bloody stool. I had to strip the bed and the pillow cases and clean it all up and track down the little guy who wouldn't let me check out his butt but I could see something dark and he immediately got down to tidying himself up. He seems fine this morning - I just woke up from a second 5 hrs straight sleep and have yet to hunt around the house.

Anyone had anything like this happen to their pet before? ?Of course my husband is away and has the car. I can try and get our mobile vet to come to the house (love that service) but more than likely they won't be able to do so until Monday.

TIA.?

  • Poor thing. ? If he seems fine, I would just keep an eye on him & call the vet Monday morning.

  • Can you call the pet hospital? They're open 24/7 and can talk to you over the phone. With that much blood, I would be concerned. GL!

  • I would find someone to take you to the emergency vet ASAP.  Bloody stool is not a good thing.  It needs to be checked out immediately.  Please be responsible for your kitty and get it some help today.

  • This happened to our cat, too.  It ended up being a bowel blockage which eventually led to his liver shutting down and we had to have him put down.  :(  Ours is probably a very extreme case, but I would recommend getting him checked out on Monday just to make sure everything's okay.

  • I finished typing and called the cat hospital. The doctor should call me back within the hour but the person I spoke to said that if he's up and moving around and eating (he's doing all of the above and playing with his brothers) that it's a common occurrence and that the doctor will tell me to watch him for a few days and if it gets worse or lasts longer than three days to bring him in.
  • Be careful and make sure you wash your hands really well. Toxoplasmosis is a scary thing.
  • Amazing what you naturally do when you wake up to this sort of thing at 5am. I immediately scrubbed my hands with soap. And I took all the sheets off in a bundle and let them soak in the tub for my hubby to deal with when he gets home tomorrow. I'm avoiding the litter box.

I'm happy to report that he's greedily chowing down on food right now!!!?

  • oh my goodnes, that sounds very scary.  i am glad you got some reassurance from the lady on the phone.  i hope everything turns out to be just fine.  poor little kitty.

p.s. i lasted 7 hours last night before i had to get up and pee - woot woot.

  • I spoke with the doctor who said that with my husband, step son and I all with terrible colds, the kitty could have something similar to us?? Apparently they can catch a cold. Who knew? ?Anyway, she said that the odds are that he just had a very dry stool (he's a tiny little guy - the runt) and the strain caused him to bleed. I have to watch him today and tomorrow and if it loosens up and there is blood I have to take him to the Emergency Animal Hospital over in Rosedale.

She's reassured that he's eating and not lethargic and doesn't feel she needs to see him. If it continues, DH has to take a stool swab (HA welcome home honey) for them to test to see if it is a parasite or worms or something else. He's chatty and friendly and happily sitting in the window checking things out.

Bunny if you have cats or ever get them, the Bay Cat Animal Hospital here in downtown is AMAZING! Love the doctors and staff there.?

  • glad to hear things are looking positive.  i have two kitties and they go to the animal hospital on eglinton west of yonge.  luckily they don't have to go very often but so far i have found the staff to be really great.  we are looking to move though so i appreciate the tip.  take care
