Picky Eaters come in

Do you just make what your child will eat, or just leave unwanted food on their tray?  If I do this, he'll scream and cry.  My son used to eat a variety of different foods, but now will only eat yogurt, blueberries, applesauce, cheerios, toast, crackers, waffles, pancakes and oatmeal.  Sometimes, he'll have a taste of meat or veggies.

I apparently was a very picky eater as a child.

If he doesn't eat enough at dinner, he'll get up in the middle of the night.  Thoughts?  I'm tired of wasting food, but want mealtimes to be enjoyable for everyone.  I also want him eating healthy.

  • DD was very slow to eat any type of meats.  Though I would still keep offering it to her.  I will usually give her a little bit of everything, but if I know she won't eat it, I will give her a smaller portion than usual (so it is not wasted).  If she doesn't eat, then I give her healthy alternatives (yogurt, fruit, etc), no junk food/snacks after the meal.

I have noticed that when she went through these phases, she was getting teeth.  We also started a daily liquid vitamin with iron in it (Poly-vi-sol made by Emfamil).

I would just keep offering it.  Now that DD is older, if she sees me eating it, she is more inclined to at least try it.

  • DS is a very picky eater too and when I'm cooking breakfast/lunch, I usually just make him something I know he will eat.  At dinner I give him what I made for us... plus a selection of food I KNOW he will eat.  Sometimes he surprises me, usually not though.  I asked his Dr. about it and he said his weight was perfect and eventhough he is being picky, he is getting a pretty good variety.  He will NOT eat veggies at all, but he will eat apples and the Dr. said that with little ones, that food group is combined.  If he's waking up in the middle of the night hungery, I would fix him something at dinner I know he would eat.  But, still offer him everything else.
  • Wow- I wish my ds would eat THAT much.  He's even more picky than yours.  My ds is in the 75% for weight so my doctor keeps telling me not to worry.  I supplement table food with some baby food so I know he'll get veggies- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I agree with the other poster who said to keep trying.  I must have given ds cheese 20 times and he threw it on the floor.  The 21st time he ate it and now loves cheese.  So you never know!

  • I was (and still am) a picky eater. DD has only recently become a picky eater, refusing to eat any kind of red meat (unless it's heavily seasoned -- think tacos) and most vegetables.

When we cook, we first offer her what everyone else is eating. If she refuses it, it sits on her plate. If everyone else finishes and she still hasn't eaten anything, DH and I will sometimes cave in and make her a sandwich. Most of the time, though, when she sees that everyone else is done and getting ready to leave the table, she'll scarf down whatever is on her plate really quick so that she can get down to play. We don't give her dessert if she doesn't finish at least half of what we serve her for dinner (her portions are usually about 1/6 the size of ours).
