I just read my blood work results online and its shows I'm anemic. the doctor hasnt called me yet so I assume its not a huge deal. Is anyone here anemic and PG? what does this mean?
I am not anemic... yet. But I did become anemic later in the pregnancy with #1 and the dr expects it will happen again. It's common. They gave me iron and all was well!
I have very bad anemia. I think I've been poked and proded to try to make sure there wasn't crazy bleeding happening somewhere causing it (this was years ago now). It's part of my life and I just roll with it. I take an iron pill with my prenatal....been taking an iron pill foreverrr though. Anyhow, it's really not that big of a deal.
I never developed anemia with my first child, but I did have it when I was 18. The doctor then explained to me that I was losing too much blood during menstruation and I'd need to either stay on birth control for a long time, change my diet completely, or stay on iron supplements for a while. Anyhow, all anemia does is deprive your body of the necessary amounts of iron it requires to function properly. So, I'm assuming pregnancy-related anemia means your iron levels are just low and that your doc may decide to increase your iron intake ever so slightly. If that's too risky during pregnancy, they may just have you change your diet. It's nothing to worry about too much...I was fine after taking iron supplements and slowly incorporating proteins back into my diet (I had been vegetarian prior to developing anemia). And I've known several women who've had anemia during their pregnancies...all of which turned out fine.
I became anemic later on around 24 weeks. I am now taking a Rx Iron pill every day and my count has gone up. You can eat more iron type foods which will help. I eat a high iron count cereal in the morning, I also added more red meat to my diet. Eating dried fruit will also help. Do a google search for foods high in iron that are ok to eat while pregnant.?
anemia is highly common during pregnancy- if you google physiologic anemia of pregnancy you should get some hits. That may not be the cause-there are lots of other reasons you could be anemic as well, which I'm sure your dr will talk to you about
Yesterday, I got a call from my doctor's office. I am anemic too. It means not enough iron in your blood. The nurse told me to buy Slow Release Iron pills, and take one a day, and also eat food that contain iron.
