I'm on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy

I know I haven't posted over here in a while.  I was hospitalized last Thursday and stayed in the hospital until Sunday b/c of contractions.  I started having contractions every 10 minutes Thurs night and when we got to the hospital they were 2-3 minutes apart on the monitor.  I wrote a blog post about it (link in my siggy), but basically they gave me a bunch of terbutaline to stop the contractions and then they kept me to monitor me.  I started cramping up again on Saturday night just before I was supposed to go home, and so then they kept me overnight again to keep me monitored.  For now I'm on 10mg of procardia every 6 hours, which is helping I hope.  I do still have contractions here and there, but not like they were that day at the hospital.

So I'm on bedrest for the rest of the pregnancy.  They took me off work and I'm allowed to get up to go to the bathroom, get food/water, and shower.  I can go out to doctor's appointments but that is all.  It has only been one week and yesterday I was already getting a bit stir crazy.  I am still pretty scared b/c the babies are still so small.  I just want to get to 28 weeks and then I think I'll feel a little better.

For now I don't have a laptop, so I can't even go online.  My computer is upstairs at our house and I can only go up the stairs once a day.  So I go down in the morning and come back up before bed.  But DH did buy a laptop yesterday, although our wireless connection in our house isn't working, so hopefully it will be up and running by tomorrow.

Any suggestions of what you did/are doing while on bedrest??  I would love to hear them!

Re: I'm on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy

  • It is so good to hear from you, I am sorry you are having such a difficult time right now.  I am glad that you are home and resting now.  Keep those bunnies cooking a little longer.

Af for bed rest I would def. say that you should try to enjoy resting as much as you can now.  I remember how much I hated bed rest and I would give anything right now for a day in bed.

I did lots of reading which was great, send your dh to the library to pick up some books, you can usually request them online through your local library and just pick them up when ready.  I also watched lots of bad daytime television and watched movies on dvd and through netflix.  If you crafty you could knit or sew something (I am so not crafty and I would have injured myself trying to knit).

You could start working on their baby books, mine are still empty right now but there's lots of stuff I could have pre-filled out when I had the time.

Good luck and I hope your wireless is up and running soon because I did TONS of nesting when I was on bed rest.

  • I just wanted to say good luck and i hope you get to keep cooking those babies. You are doing a wonderful job i know it is tough being pregnant with twins and you really cant do anything that is what happened at me about 27 weeks when my bp went way up i was even taken out of work part time. i was put on modified bed rest all i did was sit in a chair mostly all day didnt move much i watched tv and of course i went to dr appts and i also ended up having gd on top of everything so i had to make sure to test my sugar like 4 times a day it was tough i  delivered my twins at 35weeks and a day so i have faith in you that you will keep cooking them as long as your blood pressure doesnt go up. what happened to me was my blood platelets started dropping that is why i delivered when i did.

good luck and keep us up to date when you can!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The same thing happened to me at 26w1d.  I went for a routine cervical  check-up and they noticed I was already effaced and spent some time in the hospital on monitors.  I am not on complete bedrest, just modified, but I have managed to keep them cooking so far.  I am not going to lie, you will get bored, and you will get aggravated, but everyday you keep them in is one less day they have to spend in the NICU.  Tell your DH to get that wireless up and running and post post post away.  You have come so far and soon enough you will be holding those two beautiful babies in your arms, and they will be safe and sound.  Good luck to you!

  • Jut wanted to say good luck and keep those babies cooking as long as possible.
  • alpaca -- i'm keeping you and your babes in my thoughts.  a lot of 6+ers are thinking about you, too.  i hope all is well.  stay in there babies!

  • I read a lot, and watched a lot of tv, and movies. I got tv series I was interested in through netflix and watch a bunch of them. I tried to learn how to crochet but it was so boring I couldn't stand it. I took lots of naps. I had friends come over and visit, sit on my bed and keep me company and even hired a pedicurist (friend of a friend) to come to my house and paint cute plaid toenails for me :)  You will be bored for sure, but every day those babies are in there is worth it. In a few months you will be wishing you could sit around and take naps and be bored again ;)
  • I wasn't on "official" bedrest really, but the last few months of my pg I did nothing physical, just rested and ate a lot:) I got a lot of reading done, and watched every baby show known to man.  What I enjoyed a lot was watching past seasons of Lost and 24 and Nip/Tuck on dvd, no commercials! Although its sad how quickly you can watch an entire season:) You are going to to super, super busy before you know it and occasionally yearn for the time when your only job was to rest (I know I do from time to time).

I'm glad you are home and the babies are doing good! Good luck!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I went to L&D on Tuesday and had the scare of my life when the doc. told me I would have to stay in the hospital until I was 28 weeks. Lucky for me I was having contractions because I was dehydrated. I'm home for now, but I dread being put on bedrest. It will be hard for me to do with a 5 yr. old.

The only suggestion I have is have DH buy you a bunch of books, maybe try scrapbooking. Sorry I don't have any better suggestions. Good luck and don't go stir crazy!

  • I was on bedrest from 15 weeks so I feel your pain. ?You WILL get used to it believe it or not after a few weeks. ?I did a lot of reading, research on baby products, blog reading, tv watching, scrapbooking. ?I wrote thank you notes, organized all of our photos in the house, went through one box at a time from our home office, clipped recipes etc. ?Hang in there. ?You're doing a GREAT thing for your babies.
  • it gets very frustrating...i was on bedrest for 7 weeks...and it's torture. ?i noticed that you're 26 weeks 1 day today. ?i had my babies at 26+1 and seeing them struggle was by far the worst pain i have ever been through. take it easy and be extra extra cautious. ?put a plastic chair in the shower so that you don't stand in the shower. ?read books, learn to knit, call your friends, and keep taking your procardia. ?every day those babies are inside is a good day, even if it's torture on you. ?feel well and keep cooking!
  • I'm so sorry - I know how you feel.  I was on bedrest from 29-32 weeks (when they were born) in the hospital and it was so boring!  I read books (the Twilight series was quite entertaining) and watched movies.  I did crossword puzzles, talked on the phone, filled out baby books, looked at magazines, made lists, ate, and that's about it.  When your computer is working, it will be wonderful!  Just sit tight and keep those babies in!
  • I was on bedrest from 23w until I delivered at 35w6d (weeks 23-34 were in the hospital). ?I loved playing Travel Scrabble (the pieces stick to the board, so you can play lying down!) & making a pg scrapbook. ?I ?wish I'd done some baby book prep too, b/c I still haven't started mine! ?I was online a LOT, researching/ordering baby stuff & reading/posting on message boards. ? ?If the laptop doesn't work out, have dh bring your computer downstairs...we rented a rolling bedside table from a convalescent supply company for mine & it was FABULOUS!! ?I'd highly suggest renting one (they're cheap), b/c it was great also for meals & working on the scrapbook. ?Hang in there & good luck!
  • Oh Alpaca!  I'm sorry to hear this from you.  I'm sure everything will be fine, and I'm glad you are going to be on bedrest to help those babies keep cooking.

I have to tell you about the eerie coincidences again. . .I was in L&D on Thursday having contractions too!  Luckily mine stopped, they didn't keep me overnight, and I am on Procardia too, but only once a day.  I was released to go back to work, but can be done whenever I tell the doctor I am ready to be done.

    Hang in there sweetie!
