octuplet mom used IVF

I was so sad to hear this on the news this morning (confirmed by the grandmother).  That puts such a bad name on IVF and fertility treatments in general.  What ethical doctor transfers that many embryos???

Re: octuplet mom used IVF

  • omg! that's crazy! and awful for all of my friends who used IVF responsibly. man. that sucks.

  • Plus they said she has 6 kids at home already. But no word about a father. She lives with her parents. It makes me a little sad.

  • Wow..I just thought it was IUI...How in the world would a doctor but that many back in..Even if some split. That doctor had to put a lot back in..

  • That's pretty crazy. And yeah, I was sad to hear there was no mention of a father. I guess it's good she lives with her parents then so she has at least some help as an apparently single parent of (gulp) 14 kids ...

  • WHAT!?!??!  Who's the dr and what's the clinic?  Honestly, there should be laws - it isn't safe or responsible...jeez, I'm revved up and it's only 7 am
  • I read somewhere, but can't remember where off the top of my head, that her husband is a contractor in Iraq.

I also heard that she used IVF.  I wish they would find the RE that did her procedure and get some details on what was done.  Oh, and if that RE transferred enough embryos for her to get pregnant with octuplets, I think his or her medical license should be reviewed and possibly revoked.  That's so irresponsible!

I just hope that the grandmother doesn't know what she's talking about and that she didn't actually do IVF and actually did and IUI or something.

    **Edit**

I found the article that talks about the husband: https://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/01/30/mother.octuplets/index.html  Apparently he is due to return to Iraq, he isn't currently in Iraq.

  • I agree...totally ridiculous!!! My RE wouldn't put more than 2 in!!! Who is hers? Very irresponsible and totally an unfair view on IVF. That is NOT the norm!
  • Wow, that should be illegal.  I hope that doctor loses his license.

I'm sure our taxes are going to that woman now because she's probably filing for assistance.  How irresponsible.

  • Honestly, I can't believe it.  I can't imagine an RE putting more than two embryos into a woman who already had 6 kids.

  • I can't believe this. The RE was probably using her as a science experiment.
  • I seriously wonder if the grandmother knows what she's talking about.  I would be very surprised if she did IVF.  The whole thing is shady.
  • Ditto Denvergirl and MrsLee.

  • It's possible that the Grandmother did what I do-- used IVF as her catch all term for all ART.

  • If they did do IVF and the grandmother didn't get her terminology mixed up, then I find it to be very irresponsible on the dr's part and also the mother's part as well for consenting to have that many transferred back in.

  • Is it possible that she had some split?  I can't imagine a dr putting 8 in.  I am surprised that she has 6 already, lives at home and no father in sight.

    I don't get it.

  • Clearly, there's some misinformation in this story (most likely mental illness too). ?I try not to be judgmental of others, but I'm sorry, the whole thing is just ridiculously crazy.
  • The whole thing reeks to me of DIY IF treatments. I'd bet she bought some clomid off the internet and is making the rest up. If you read the stories carefully she didn't seek medical treatment with the docs at the medical center until 12 weeks. You can't tell me any RE (or any doc for that matter) would have held onto an octuplet (or septuplet as they thought) pregnancy till 12 weeks. It wouldn't happen. It's very shady. I think that is also the reason this woman wants her privacy so much... I think she has a lot to hide...and she needs psychiatric help.
