Dr. Luke's weight gain schedule

I know her ideas about caloric intake and weight gain are subject to some debate on this board, but I don't really have any other reference for how big I'm supposed to be right now.  According to Dr. Luke's book, I should have gained at least 19 pounds so far.  I've only gained 10 and feel like I'm eating like a horse!   At my last u/s, the babies were measuring just fine so I'm not too concerned, but I'm wondering when all this weight gain is going to hit me.

Did you guys gain weight steadily all throughout your PG, or did you have "growth spurts" at times where you suddenly put on a lot of weight in a short period of time?  Should I be more concerned about this?

Re: Dr. Luke's weight gain schedule

  • I ended up getting stomach flu early on and lost about 6 lbs. Just in the past couple weeks my appetite has become insatiable and I've gained about 10 lbs. Obviously I'm not on her track either but I figure as long as I continue to eat appropriately and the babies continue to grow I'm doing fine.

  • AS long as you are ganing and the babies are fine, I wouldn't worry too much.  I have gained 32 lbs at this point (27 weeks) and think that's pretyt good.  One month (between 18 and 22 weeks) I gained 10 lbs which is a lot and was very upset but the next month (betwwn 22 and 26 weeks) I only gained 1 lb! So I guss I just had a growth spurt.  My point is try to gain but don't worry too much about the numbers.

  • I didn't start really gaining until about 20 weeks. Now I have gained 48lbs and my doctor is very please with that. As long as you are eating I wouldn't stress too much about the actual weight number.
  • I have not been really following her caloric guidelines.  I've been trying to eat 600 calories more, but I don't count calories.  I just eat when I'm hungry.  I have gained about 17 lbs.  I didn't have m/s and was starving my first tri, so I gained quite a bit then.  It's funny because I've told people that I've gained that much and they are shocked.  I'm just all belly!  I had a big growth spurt around 18-19 weeks.  I wouldn't be concerned, if your dr is not concerned.  Just eat when you are hungry and make sure you are getting enough calcium & protein (and everything else).  I'm sure you will "catch up" soon enough!
  • I've also been concerned with weight gain since I started out "under weight" by Dr. Luke's standards and my OB and MFM follow her standards as well. I was worried at 15 weeks when I hadn't gained any weight after drinking protein shakes and following her plan loosly. Now at 21 weeks I'm up 17 pounds and am still gaining so I'm pretty happy with that. I would bet you are about to hit a growth spurt. If your doctors aren't worried, then I wouldn't worry.

  • I gained 70 pounds total....50 of that was in the last 4 months. ?It was like a snowball effect. ?I was right with my singleton girlfriend (size and weight wise) until week 21.

I will admit though that I ate whatever I wanted and I took off work the month before delivering...staying home with ALL the holiday food was amazing! ?And I never had any morning sickness or food aversions.

BTW-my kids were 7.3 and 5.6 born at 37 weeks and I am 6'1. ?I lost 33 pounds the week after delivery.

  • I started really putting on weight around the middle of the second tri -- as long as your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't worry -- just make sure you're eating healthy like you should be.
  • You shouldn't be concerned at all.  I'm not a Dr. Luke fan - I didn't even know that the book existed until I joined these boards AFTER my girls were born.  When I found out that I was pregnant w/ trips at 17 weeks, everyone started telling me that I should have gained all this weight.  My doctor told me no - that I really didn't need to eat that much more.

I carried my girls to 35.6 weeks and gained 50 lbs.  The babies weighed 5.3, 4.13 and 4.13.  I started out at 105 lbs.

The babies are going to take what they need from you.  Anything else is just going to be extra weight on your body.

  • I have the same worries right now. ?I'm 15.5 weeks and have only gained 3 pounds, even though I'm eating a lot. ?These responses make me feel somewhat better. ?

Maybe Dr. Luke's book isn't so great after all. ?My OB/GYN said to just eat to the point of satiation and that Dr. Luke's book was written before they could monitor babies' growth as well as they can now w/ultrasound. ?So I guess Dr. Luke's plan was to just tell women to gain like crazy in the hopes that it'd pass on to the babies. ?I don't know if that's a fair assessment, but that seems to be what my dr. thinks.

  • I stayed pretty steady through the 1st tri, then started to gain.  I'm up 15 lbs. and I know the recommendation is appox. 24 lbs. by 24 weeks.  I don't think I'm going to be able to put on another 9 lbs. in the next 2 weeks, but during my first growth scan, the boys looked fine.  They were even measuring big for their age (one in the 70th percentile, the other in the 85th) so I'm not really worrying.  All of my weight gain has been in my belly without a lot of extra elsewhere (butt, face, legs, etc.).  Everyone is different so I'm not concerned.  As long as the boys keep looking healthy, I'm happy!  Oh, and I'm also eating like a horse.  I eat 8 or 9 times a day!
  • I definitely wouldn't worry! Just keep eating and believe me, the weight will come. :-)

As for me, I threw up for 28 of the 34 weeks, so I only gained 28 pounds total. Weight always tends to pick up during 2nd/3rd tri so don't worry!
