Ummmmm Wow. I don't care how experienced you are. It's not worth risking losing the baby for a few hours of fun. There will still be ski slopes around next year.
I'm sorry, but I think this is a dumb thing to flame about.
As many times as we use the reponse "Your baby is the size of a seed and encased in your pelvic bones right now" to stupid first tri questions, it strikes me as funny that we're forgetting that with this post.
She's doing exactly what we tell all stupid 1st tri-ers to do. "Ask your doctor and follow his/her advice versus the advice of a message board"
Many women who may not be trying do not even know they are pregnant and drink and do high activity sports that didn't harm the baby. However, knowing that you are and still doing it is another thing. Although her Doc said it was Ok, out of common sense I wouldn't chance it at all.
That was actually my first thought when I saw this. I didn't find out I was PG until almost 6 weeks and I did a lot of taboo things in that time... I can understand what you're saying, and I agree. I think it's just hard for me to think of doing this because I've already seen and heard my baby's heartbeat. If I was just barely PG and hadn't attached as much emotion to it I may feel differently... who knows.
I'm sorry, but I think this is a dumb thing to flame about.

I'm actually going to play devils advocate on this one. She's 4 weeks pregnant. Falling isn't likely to do any harm to her at this early a stage.
A month or two from now, sure of course not. But right now? She barely knows she's pregnant yet.
Ditto. I'm a horseback rider and a lot of us ride the first several weeks to keep the horse in shape. All our doctors said a fall, while it could be harmful to us, would not cause a miscarriage.
Now this brings me to another subject: my FIL who is 66 and had a heart attack in November is going skiing in Colorado this week....AAAAHHHH!!!
She called her doctor. Her doctor siad it's fine. We flame people for not trusting their doctor's advice. Other nesties have done the same thing because THEIR doctor said it was ok
How is there any risk? Falling at 4 weeks pregancy does not = terrible mother.
Um, guess what? A lot of doctors will okay skiing early in pregnancy. Ask me how I know.
How do you know?? ::Prays its not because she went skiing::
?Er, well...I did have the okay: we had a huge ski trip planned to the Dolomites. Aaaaand then I chickened out. I am an experienced skiier, but I decided that any sport that I also wear a helmet to do, I'd rather not take the chance on while pg: I'm just cautious that way.?
HOWEVER, I'm sure as heck not going to flame someone else who, like me, had the okay from HER doctor for a specific activity. I certainly don't think that makes her an idiot, or ignorant. Quite the opposite: she asked her doctor and did some research. ?

For me.. its not the fact that she's going skiing... if she wants to take that chance then take it, if something happens it will be on her. The annoying thing is that she asked people on here for advice and thoughts about it and then completely ignored it.. not saying everyone should listen to us bump girls but don't ask if it doesn't matter. Thats stupid.. and i'm sure she knew what responses from us would be.. it's like she wanted to just start something.
oh and let me just add that while her baby is the size of a seed and safely held in her pelvic region doesn't mean that she is invincible. Something could easily happen to her that could harm her baby. Just because she falls doesn't mean that her baby will get hurt but she may and it could be severe and could be harmful to the baby.
She's 4 freaking weeks!!!! She has nothing to worry about.
If a woman can fall out of a plane and have her parachute malfunction, slam into the ground at 55 mph and still have her 8 week old fetus be okay, then that girl will be just fine.
I dont care if it's low-risk or not. It is NOT WORTH IT.
Then you should not eat lunch meat. There's a small risk that you could contract listeria, you know. I mean that's just NOT WORTH IT. Good grief.
I dont eat lucnchmeat. It's not good for you.
Skiing is a completely different story, though, because people routinely go skiing and end up injured. It's almost to be expected. Some 200 lb man could come careening down the double diamond trail and crush you. She can take whatever risks she wants with her body and her child and that is her business, but I would never because I could never forgive myself for being so reckless if something happened. If you are the kind of person who is fine with that, then be my guest. I personally would rather have no regrets and not spend the rest of my life wondering "what if I had just not gone skiing?"

?I agree...at 4 weeks, is there really a risk?
?
Probably not. To me, the biggest risk you're assuming is that you would be involved in a collision with another skier...which is why I chickened out myself (and why I wear a helmet.) I'm not too concerned about keeping myself under control: I've skiied all my life, but accidents can happen, especially if you cross paths with someone who may be inexperienced and/or out of control. So, I'd guess that you're probably assuming the same risk as say, driving a car. But I have to drive a car...skiing, for me at least, will wait 'til next year.?
i was training for a big cycle ride (which i did not complete) and my doc told me i could rise the bike, in traffic, helmet and all until "i felt i wasn't comfortable" as long as i kept my heart rate below a certain level.
and i had a pretty high chance of falling, getting hit, etc.
i rode a bike in manhattan at 11 weeks.
if your doctor okays it, then i don't see the issue. you're pregnant, not crippled.
I dont care if it's low-risk or not. It is NOT WORTH IT.

And, ultimately, that's what I decided for myself, too.
But to flame her and call her an idiot for deciding for herself? Well, then you should go ahead and flame me for having eaten lunchmeat a time or two while pg. ??

I don't believe I called her an idiot. . .
I'm just not the kind of person who takes that kind of risk, period, so it happens to boggle my mind. I don't understand, and I said it's not worth it, (I'm sure EVERYONE on here would agree that a weekend of skiing isn't worth the life of your child if it came down to it), but I don't recall flaming anyone. . .
I'm actually going to play devils advocate on this one. She's 4 weeks pregnant. Falling isn't likely to do any harm to her at this early a stage.

I also ditto this...everybody who has not checked with your dr should just back off. My dr said I could continue doing all activities/spots that I did pre-pg until 2nd tri. At 4 weeks the baby is barely there and a fall is not going to hurt the baby.
I'm sorry, but I think this is a dumb thing to flame about.

What if she accidentally broke her leg and had to have surgery which required being put under? Or broke her neck?
Plenty of people have surgery while pregnant, we just have to carefully
monitor them throughout the surgery and afterward. I had a patient
once who broke her leg at 34 weeks and had to have surgery--she had a
spinal and the baby is fine.
The biggest risk of falls while pregnant comes from a placental abruption. She's 4 weeks, there isn't a placenta yet.
BFP #1: m/c at 8 weeks; BFP #2: DD born 6/9/09; BFP #3 m/c at 5 weeks; BFP #4 m/c at 8 weeks, D&E; BFP #5 DS born 8/12/12

Wow, so its either one extreme with the freaking out about lunch meat, or the other with the reckless endangerment of the fetus? Good times.
I agree with you, but Blair made a very good point in her comment.

Agreed.?
That's just it. Would I do it? No. But I'm not a very experienced skiier. If I were it might be different.
I don't see how going skiing at 4 weeks pregnant is risking the life of her child.
I have a greater risk of falling on the ice outside of my office every day.
Ditto. I'm a horseback rider and a lot of us ride the first several weeks to keep the horse in shape. All our doctors said a fall, while it could be harmful to us, would not cause a miscarriage.

Thank you. That's exactly what I was saying too
Ditto this too. And caffeine. And sushi. And all the other things we talk about on here and flame n00bs for asking about.
I agree...at 4 weeks, is there really a risk?
Joaquin's hospital and Isela's birth center med & intervention free "hypnobabies" birth stories

I'm LOL at the uproar over this.
