weird schedule

For the past several nights, Lillian has been up from about 9 p.m. until 3 a.m.  She nurses well around 9, I try to put her down and she wakes up.  We change her, walk her, try to soothe her but she won't fall back to sleep.  I end up trying to nurse her again around 11 and she nurses but is fussy and seems like she can't be satisfied.  Last night I broke down and gave her a bottle around 3 a.m.  She finally dozed off at 3:30.  I don't understand this strange schedule.  I wonder if she is sleeping too much during the day and not feeding enough?  I hate to wake her when she naps during the day but am wondering if I should if she sleeps for more than two hours.  Maybe she has her days and nights confused.  Any suggestions on how to get her straightened out?  We are exhausted!  TIA.

Re: weird schedule

  • It sounds completely normal.  What helped us was dimming the lights starting at 9 pm, and keeping all activities really low key (no big giggly smiles, no tickling, etc...).  We did more playful stuff when he was up during the day.  He's getting it worked out now...

  • I would try waking her up during the day to feed her. ?At least not going any more than three hours during the day in between feedings. ?That is what we have done and she has gotten on a pretty good schedule regarding nights. ? Olivia does the fussy not satisfied thing a lot during feedings, I've chalked it up to gas or her just wanting to suck but not eat. ?I know you had problems breastfeeding, but may want to try giving a pacifier. ?Olivia just likes to suck so I would be feeding constantly if it weren't for the pacifier. ?It hasn't interfered with her latching on or anything either in my opinion. ?Does it seem like she is gassy? ?You may want to try giving her gas drops to see if that settles her down and lets her fall back asleep. ?

    Good luck. ?

  • I tried really hard to keep DS awake during the day between naps at least 45 mins to 1.5 hrs.  So I'd let him nap, but then try to keep him up.  He ended up napping less and becoming more tired at night.  I also started putting him down super early, like 7pm.  I really followed Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.
