Piper has her first ear infection

DH took Piper to the doctor this morning for a lingering cold, and turns out she has an ear infection. The pedi said it's probably as a result of her cold virus as it looks pretty new. They have her on antibiotics but didn't give ear drops or anything. Is that normal?

Tell me your ear infection experiences - how long do they usually take to clear up? Do you give Tylenol for the pain?

Re: Piper has her first ear infection

  • Boo! Maggie's had a couple. She doesn't do much to indicate she's in any pain, so we just let the antibiotics do their work and give Tylenol if she seems particularly fussy. Hope miss Piper gets to feeling better!

  • Poor thing :(  Its normal to not get an rx for ear drops form the doctor.  An ear infection isn't external (its in the middle part of the ear), so ear drops don't help, unless it is a very extreme case, where they might give numbing drops.  Mason was much improved after one day of antibiotics when he had his.  I prefer ibuprofen over Tylenol for pain, but either or both will work.  Hope Piper feels better!

  • I don't have any experience with this :::knocks on wood::: but I wanted to say Piper must have a kickass immune system as she's went a long time before having one.  I hope she feels better soon!

Oh and like pp I prefer Motrin to Tylenol for pain relief.

  • ditto on her going for so long without having one!  our pedi congratulated on us for going 11 mos. before ava had one (and then she went and had 3 in 3 months after that.  boo.).  anyway, it stinks no matter how long she has held off.  they are no fun to deal with!  i hope she feels better soon!

  • Mya has the same thing. We got an antibiotic she has been taking since Sun and we have been giving her motrin for the pain. She is doing better with the pain however still has a cough and horse sounding voice.?
  • Poor Piper. I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly. Nora had several ear infections over the course of last year and it seemed like there were always a couple bad days before I noticed her feeling better. After one very lengthy infection, the pedi gave us some numbing ear drops. She slept so good after we used them. I always gave Motrin for the pain. My friend swears by garlic oil in the hear. She warms it a little bit and uses that for her toddler's ear infections. I picked up some of the garlic oil in the pediatric section at Whole Foods to try if she gets another one.
  • Poor Piper! Ryan has yet to have an ear infection too ;;knock on wood;; and I am dreading the day she does. My nephews both had them a lot and they both now have tubes. I hope she feels better soon!

  • The king of ear infections lives with us.  We used Motrin in addition to antibiotics when he was having them constantly.  I don't think we were ever given ear drops for any of Justin's ear infections........we have some now that we have to give if he ever gets another one, but it's because he has tubes in his ears and they get treated differently now.

The antibiotic should help her feel better in 24-36 hours.  Poor little girl.

  • Thanks for the question b/c we're going in today for a suspected ear infection.  We haven't had to give Grace any kind of medicine for 8 months so I know how you feel.  I think ours is teething related if that's possible.  I thought we missed the teething monster but apparently it's sneaky and showed up in the form of an ear infection.
