Newborn in your room or in the nursery?

If you're an expecting mom, what are your plans for where the baby will sleep the first month or two?  Are you plannig on having them in a bassinet?  If not that what (pack n' play, swing, bouncer seat)?
Or are you planning on having them sleep in their crib in a different room right off the bat?

Our bedroom is small and not a lot of room for a pack n' play or bassinet,so I was thinking for that reason we could just have them start sleeping in their crib, plus we than wouldn't have the expense of the bassinet.
But I also know getting up and going into the nursery for feedings and diaper changes in the middle of the night might be a pain too.

How about you existing moms?  What did you do?

  • Good grief!  Sorry for all the posts!

I was saying, that I would have a comfy chair in the nursery too, so that I can pass out in the chair if necessary.  Stick out tongue

  • "They" say to have your baby when he/she is 3 months old where you want them at one year.

What worked very well for me was I kept my baby in my room in a pack and play right by the bed til he was 3 months old and was sleeping for longer stretches at night. Then moved him into his own room/crib.

    Good luck! :)

  • We kept out son in a bassinet in our room because he woke up so many times to nurse, diaper change, etc...and he was so tiny!! It was nice to look at him. At 8 weeks we decided to try to let him sleep in his crib, and it worked. Never went back. He does sleep in a PNP at my inlaws house when we stay over for a night.
  • We put DS in his crib in his room as soon as we were home from the hospital.  It worked out great for us!  He has always slept great in his crib and his room is right across the hall from our room.  I didn't mind getting up in the night to nurse him, I would rather do that than have him sleep in our room (I personally just felt that if he were in our room, I wouldn't sleep at all).
  • I don't have the expense of a bassinet as we will be borrowing one from a close family friend.  We are planning on having baby in our bedroom in the bassinet for the first few months as the baby's bedroom is on the other side of the house.
  • We are still talking about this one.  (We've got a while to decide!)  But I think that I would like to have the baby in the room for a little bit and then use the crib.  DH says put the baby in the crib right away!  So we will figure out what works best when baby comes I guess.

Side note, my cousin said that she wanted to have her DS sleep in room with them but he snored!  So by the thrid night he was downstairs in his own room because he kept mom and dad up at night!!  haha

  • We plan to have our son sleep in his crib in the nursery when we come home from the hsopital.

But we do have a pack-n-play in our bedroom if that plan goes to hell.

  • DD #1 spent a week in the NICU so for my peace of mind, she spent her 1st 5 weeks at home in a bassinet right next to the bed.  The plan had been for her to go right to her crib though.  I have to say, we both started sleeping much better when she moved into her own room, into her crib at 6 weeks old though.

DD#2 started sleeping in her crib from her 1st night home and never left her room after that.  On rough nights, I would cuddle with her in bed for a bit but I could never co-sleep as I never slept.  She had bad reflux and spent a few months sleeping in a chair all strapped in.

I have an awesome glider and ottaman in the nursery and when the girls were waking up at night to eat, I kept a big blanket in there for me so I woudl be comfortable and it worked great.  It was also nice so that the parent that didn't do that feeding could still sleep.

  • We went straight to the crib in the nursery. I didn't want to have to transition twice (from bassinet in our room, to crib in nursery), so we just started with him in there and it was great. If you don't want the expense of the bassinet, just get a pnp with a bassinet insert - that works well too.
  • My boys will be sharing a room, next to ours. Since my older DS is with his dad for 2-3 nights a week, I'll have baby sleep in his crib (in the boys' bedroom) for those night. And the nights my older DS is with me, the younger DS will be in a bassinet in our bedroom with DH and I.

  • We'll be borrowing my brother and SIL's bassinet and having the baby sleep in our room for the first few weeks.  I'm a worrier and there is no way I would sleep at night with the baby being in a different room from me.

I'll probably just bring the baby in the nursery for feedings/changings, etc and then put him/her back in our room with me to sleep.

  • Our daughter was in our room until 3 months and then in the nursery. We will do the same with this one.

  • well our original plan was to have her sleep in a cosleeper in between us in our bed.  but she just would not sleep in it.  i think it was because my DH moved too much.  so when she was 6 days old she was put in the crib and she's been there ever since.  i was nervous at first but i'm glad now that it went that way because i didn't have to try to transition her to it
  • We used an Arm's Reach Co-sleeper, and loved it.  It's kind of like a pack 'n play, but it connects to your bed and has the baby at the level of the mattress.  He had his own protected space, so no worries (or at least less worries) about SIDS.  I loved having him close.  Plus, I could just roll over for night feedings.  (I had an emergency c-section, and my abs were in no condition for getting out of bed multiple times a night during the first 6 wks.)

Our bedroom is pretty small, but it still fit.  It's also kind of expensive.  However, I've seen them at Once Upon a Child if you don't mind gently used items.

  • We are planning on having the baby sleep in the nursery right away if possible.  The nursery is right across the hall from our room so unless it becomes a huge deal to have him/her sleep there, we will be doing that.  We do have a back-up pack n play just in case Cool
  • DD slept in the bassinet in our room until she was almost 4 months old.  She was well under the weigth limit and she didn't roll yet so we left her there.  It was easier than going to her room every couple hours.
  • With DD1 she slept in her crib right away.  We never even had a bassinet or pack n play for her.  With DD2 I bought a pack n play and kept her in our room at night (in the crib for naps, though) because I didn't want her to wake up DD1.  When she started sleeping better at night I switched her to her crib and she never woke up her sister.  With this baby I think that I'll follow the same plan.  The older 2 will have bunk beds and the new baby will sleep in my room at night and nap in the crib.
