Multiples

Did you work out while pregnant?

I'm expecting twins and with most pregnancies doctors encourage physical activity. I forgot to ask my doctor if it's the same with twins. SO did you guys work out while pregnant with multiples and at what point did you stop? What kinds of exercises did you do? Thanks for your help.

Re: Did you work out while pregnant?

  • I did.  My hospital offered free memebership to our local YMCA during my pregnancy.  I really liked the water exercises.

  • i worked out until 26 weeks when I went into PTL and then ended up on modified bedrest.  If it wasn't for that, I would still be doing yoga as it made my back feel so much better
  • I did not/could not.  At 20 weeks I was geeting contractions when I went for walks so, I pretty much took it easy after 22 weeks.
  • early on i was going walking for about an hour a night- but then the time changed and it got cold/dark - and that stopped.... so since then- i haven't really done anything other than chasing my toddler around and my job (which has me walking around a lot, too)....

my Ob wants me to take it easy - not add in anything i was not previously doing- which is pretty standard from what i have heard here and in books.... esp with twin pgs.

  • My peri said that exercise should be limited to walking, yoga, and swimming/water exercise.  I walked or did prenatal yoga pretty much everyday until I ended up on modified bedrest at 27w.

  • I walked-and made sure to park far away from stores...but aside from that no. Most of my pregnancy was during cool weather, but I may have considered swimming if the weather was warm.

  • I was an avid runner and did Crossfit workouts twice a week before I got pregnant.  But once morning sickness started (around week 8) I did nothing.  After I started to feel relief (week 13) I kept saying I was going to start walking but never did.  I regret that now b/c now it is too cold and I am too uncomfortable to do it.

My doctor just told me she would take me out of work at 30 weeks if I wanted to but I don't have any health issues right now so I would rather use my time off after the babies arrive.

  • I have been doing the eliptical, stairmaster, walking and light lifting.  I was told not to run a lot just to be careful, but they said I could workout as long as I was comfortable and didn't over exert myself.
  • I worked out (usually 1 hr on the treadmill per night) until 8w when the horrible all day sickness kicked in and I couldn't do it anymore. My OB said he didn't want me exercising after 20w and I was sick from 8w on so I haven't done anything since then. Shame, because I would have loved to continue exercising.
  • My OB wants me to work out as long as I want to and feel comfortable and don't make myself short of breath. I used to work out for about 45 minutes 5-6x/week pre-pregnancy.

Now, I try to do something every other day. A few weeks back I did something 3 days in a row and I was really worn out. I include in this if I'm going to the mall and walking around. My workouts are either 1) my Prenatal Yoga DVD - I've always done the 3rd trimester even though I did alot of yoga pre-pregnancy because I feel more comfortable 2) going to the gym and doing very light weights for about 10-15 minutes and then walking on treadmill for 10-15 minutes.

  • I wasn't allowed to work out at all, but I was allowed to work. I worked up until 33 weeks, and now I'm home. I think it is different for everyone.
  • I would go for walks until it got cold.  I didn't want to add anything too new since I haven't really worked out since starting IVF. I did however just start doing prenatal yoga 1-2x a week to help my back.
  • Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to continue the elliptical for 1 mile every other day until it gets uncomfortable.
