2nd Trimester

BIG U/S vent

so I had my regular appt yesterday and was supposed to schedule my BIG U/S.  My Dr. told me to get it done between 18-21 weeks (she also input it into the med system).  I got sent down to Radiology to schedule it and the lady tells me they won't see me until I'm 20 weeks and they're booked and that I need to call back next week to see if they have any openings for week 21!!!!

Unfortunately, I go to a Military Treatment Facility (I HAVE to) and while I have a referral in the system to go to a civilian place, I have to wait for some stupid letter from Tricare telling me where to go and when.  It'll take at least 10 business days after my MTF files the paperwork.

God only knows how long that will take.

And people say that they want free health care????...  Guess what?  Mine's free and it's a royal pain in the a&&!

Re: BIG U/S vent

  • if it makes you feel any better my appt is at 21w 3d!!! im pretty sure ive seen ppeopl on here that are due AFTER me already have theirs and find out what they are having... oh well.. 25 more days

  • Aw. Im sorry to hear that! I hate Tricare...love the free healthcare but the whole referral process is stupid. With my first appt. I called the drs office before I had the referral in hand to make the appt so I wouldnt have to wait. It worked for me! Also when I first got pregnant they went ahead and gave me the referral for 18 visits...maybe you could ask about that! GL
  • I've learned to expect nothing less from MTFs. I plan on calling the beginning of next week to make my big U/S appt. I'm persistent and sometimes rude and it always seems to get through to them.

I'm sorry you have to wait, but your last comment is ridiculous.

    I'm assuming you're being sarcastic.

I'm sure you do realize that people that can't afford any health care, would be thrilled to be in your position.

Also, are you in some way prohibited from paying for a health care plan that would better suit your needs?

  • I have TRICARE too and hate the whole referral process. Luckily I live many miles away from a base (DH is deployed and I moved back home) so I go to a civilian Dr. and hospital.

As outrageous as her comment sounds, there are a lot of loops you have to jump through for Tricare. On top of that, the basic standard of care is completely different from the civilian world. Basically, everyone is treated if they know nothing at all, unless you get a good civilian who works at an MTF or someone who knows that some people understand their own medical conditions.

Imagine having to go to an orientation class with EVERY child you have. It's a bit unnecessary.

  • I don't understand the free med pain in the a$$ part but I'm not having my big u/s until 21w4d! That frustration I do understand. It sucks! But at least by then there isn't any guess of what the sex is Wink
  • Sorry about the confusion, but glad your baby is doing well...stay as calm as you can!
  • I don't know if this is an option for you but, with my first DD we were going to Ft Belvoir b/c it was the closest to us. ?We lived in Burke, VA at the time. ?After the second appt I told my DH I would not deliver her there. ?I hated the doctors and how long the wait was for appts...everything about it. ?We switched to Bethesda Naval and I LOVED it. ?I can't say enough good things about that place. ?An added bonus was that you get your own private room after delivery and you share at Ft Belvoir. ? I know it is a drive from where you are but I think it is worth it.

?Maybe you should check in to it. ?Good Luck!?

  • I knew you were receiving gov care before I finished your post.  lol  It sucks doesn't it? They are like that with everything.  I love the, um well call me in a week bit.  No other doc office would do that.

    Good luck to you.

  • I don't think it's that unreasonable to have to wait until 21w4d for an ultrasound.  My SIL is pregnant, has no health insurance, and isn't eligible for medicaid so she's paying for all her maternity care out-of-pocket.  Since an ultrasound wasn't included in the global fee at the low-cost clinic she's going to, she'd decided not to have one at all and just wait 40 weeks to find out the baby's sex.  Luckily, she and her husband managed to scrape together enough money to pay for one, but still.

Plus, sorry if this is too political, but not all gov't health care is horrible.  It's more a matter of the amount of $$ and resources that are put behind it.  If the gov't would truly prioritize health care for military families and recent vets, it could be a great system.

I know from experience what the VA health care system is capable of -- my grandfather is one of the lucky WWII "gold member" veterans who receives excellent, timely care.  He switched to the VA after 50+ years of private insurance and couldn't be happier.  Says he's never received more capable, professional, and efficient care.

So sure, in practice it may suck for most people right now, but with the right oversight and proper funding, a government-run health care system could be great.
