Just when I thought I knew all there is to know

A friend of mine is due Presidential Weekend with a singleton.  Today she emailed me saying that next week they'll break her membrane so it will speed up labor but not break the waters..Im so confused as to why they would break her membranes a week before her due date?  Also, isnt breaking the membranes the same as breaking the water?

Re: Just when I thought I knew all there is to know

  • Seems like she's got some wires crossed.  It's stripping the membranes or breaking water.  Stripping the membranes is supposed to help labor get started.  I'm not sure why a OB would want to start someone's labor when they aren't 40 weeks yet.  It means that they remove the membranes from the cervix area in hopes to get labor started naturally.

  • Yep, stripping membranes.  Lots of doctors will do this early.  Its not any sorts of guarantee that labor will start.  For some it does, for others it don't.  Your membranes can also reconnect.  Your doctors can strib it at 38 weeks, again at 39 weeks and you might still have to be induced at 41 weeks.
