Cincinnati Babies

entertaining an 8 month old

Ladies,

What do you do with your DC throughout the day?  I feel like I am doing the same things with Max every day.  He is very behind in his motor skills.  He can't sit up or roll over, so we are very limited.  He also hates being on his belly because he has 4 tubes coming out of it.

We do the playmat, jumperoo, and swing.  We also sit him up between our legs so that he can play with his drum and table, but only tolerates it for a few minutes.

What are some other options?

Re: entertaining an 8 month old

  • Read books, sing songs, talk to him like an adult, LOL!  They are soo easy going at that age.  Also, have you tried propping him up with a boppy pillow or pillows around him to have some face to face time?  Not sure if he is strong enough for that or not yet.  If you can't prop him up, try getting a mirror and making faces and talking to him with a mirror for him to see you and himself :-)  They usually like that.  Okay, that was sooo the speech therapist in me, LOL!  It does seem repetitious though that is for sure!  How is Max doing?
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • oh Evan had this toy that he loved!  he would lay on his back and it had a ball that hung down and if you kicked it it would play a noise.  I got it as a shower gift.  let me see if I can find it.

Actually when his EI physical therapist saw it she loved it!

  • I dont see it on there website.  boo.

other things I would do was read to him.  play patty cake.

    he loved his jumparoo.

    sorry i'm drawing a blank.

  • Would he like splashing in some water? perhaps fill up a small basin with some water and bath toys and let him reach inside.

Take an empty kleenex box and put some interesting bits inside for him to reach in and touch, foil, paper, stuff like that.

Maggie likes when we put her in a blanket, we each grab an end and make a hammock swing.

    Blow bubbles!

  • this works!  I will add these to our daily activities.  Catrina- I needed a professionals opinion, thanks!

He does love books, so I will do this more than just bed time.

  • Oh, she loves peek a boo also.

  • Oh Kristens suggestion of having him put things in and out of a box is great, evan loved that.

We also would build towers with those stackign boxes and he would knock them down.

Another thing our EI person told us to do was bubbles (which he still LOVES) she told us to blow them out of his reach to make him stretch and develop his muscles.

  • Do you have room for an exersaucer?  If you don't have one, you can borrow mine...we alternated btw that and the jumparoo.  Do you have a baby pool?  Can you fill it with play balls?  This is reaching far back for me....

Oh..Niko had a Playskool tent he LOVED to play in around that age.  You can borrow that if you want, too!  It would be better to borrow since the kids outgrow toys so quickly :)

  • I love the water ideas, but he can't get wet.  His tubes are a HUGE risk of infection and if they get wet we increase that risk.  Yes this means that Max has never had anything but a sponge bath.  I will keep them in mind for when we start decreasing the holes in my poor childs belly.

    Thanks ladies!

  • Aw shoot. Didn't even cross my mind.  The play ball suggestion is a good substitute!

  • Before DS could sit up on his own I used to love sitting in a reclined position with my legs propped up so my knees were bent.  I would sit DS on my lap leaning back on my thighs so he was almost upright and could look right at my face.....does that make sense?  Then we would sing sing sing!  He loves to listen to me sing....poor kid, cause it's not very pretty.  But I would make faces at him, help him clap his hands in time to the music, and try to get  him to reach for toys.  I don't know if you can do this with Max, but I would also turn on upbeat kids music, hold him, and dance and twirl all over the room keeping time with the music.  He loved it!

Some of the websites like gerber, fischer price, etc have ideas of games based on DC's age too.

  • These ideas are great ladies.  Thank you so so much for your input!  With are limited to some things that we can/can't do with him, but I will alter some of these ideas around so that we can do them.

    Thank you!
