Trying to Get Pregnant

Is it possible to ovulate w/o a positive opk?

So, I have had the temp rise, slight breast pain, and ovulation pains I normally get, but all my OPK's have been super negative.  I take them in the afternoon, try not to drink a lot the few hours previous.  Is there any reasons anyone knows of that they would be negative when I would actually be ovulating?  Thanks!

I have just started ttc a few months ago, and I don't have regular periods. (they are between 28 and 32 days, however.)

  • Many women ovulate and never get a positive OPK. You might just be missing your surge, somehow, or they may just not work for you. Watch and see if your temp stays high for three days. That's the best indicator with checking your cervical fluid.

  • I don't know why, but YES it has happened to me. I have had telltale signs of O'ing but neg. OPKs and then my chart clearly shows O. I think there are a lot of factors that could effect the OPKs.....
  • Yes, you can still O.

I never got ++'s later in the afternoon so I tried them around noon and I started getting ++'s.

  • I was wondering this too. I've taken OPK's 2 times daily since Tuesday and have not detected surge yet. I've had fertile cm (including lots of ewcm yesterday), what could be "o" pains, and still no surge. We'll see what happens.
  • Thank you so much!  I'm fairly new to this, so all your help is greatly appreciated.

Is it possible that they would work one month and not the next?  They  worked fine for me the first two months.

  • Yep, totally normal.  Sometimes you just miss the surge.

I used to take them once a day (around 5 PM) and had a hard time getting a positive.  As soon as I switched to twice a day (once around 11 AM, again at around 5 PM), I got more positives.  I find I get more positives in the morning than the afternoon.

It could just be your timing.  You might want to try doing them twice a day if you are having a hard time catching the surge.

  • yes, just know that if you are using FF and you are logging the negative OPK's the software might not be able to pinpoint your O even though you did O that cycle (see my current chart for an example).
  • Yes, it's completely possible. ?I used OPKs for 3 cycles and never got a positive. ?However, I knew that I O'd because I was charting - I just always missed my surge.

  • I'm having the same issue right now.  FF said I should O either tue/wed/thur.  And all my opks have been neg.  I've been doing them in the morning and evening.  I had some cramping yesterday, tons of ewcm, but my temp didn't dip much, and then this morning it went back up some.  I don't know if thats normal.  But I'm starting to get frustrated.  DH left town this morning for 5 days, so I was really hoping my O would show up before he left.  We bd'd enough before he left, so hopefully his little guys will hang on til that stubborn egg decides to come out and play! lol  GL, hope you get a positive soon!
  • I've just had 2 months of OPKs with no +, but had very obvious other O signs. This month I am going to do 2 OPKs per day.
