c-section vs. vaginal delivery

I searched before asking this but was unable to locate any discussions.  At my 27 week appt last night my doctor said that in two weeks we will decide if I want to schedule a c-section or try for a vaginal delivery.  Baby A is head down and Baby B is breech.  Her concern is that if I am able to successfully delivery Baby A but then there is trouble with Baby B I might need to have a c-section.

I don't want to have both!!  What are some of your experiences and were you faced with this same question?

I am 35 yrs old with fraternal twin boys and besides being completely uncomfortable and sleep deprived I have not had any major issues so far.

Thanks for any help!

Re: c-section vs. vaginal delivery

  • I was in the same boat as you and I decided to go ahead with the c-section because I did not want to do both.  My ob couldn't guarantee not doing both so I opted for the c-section.  I had a great experience with mine and would def. make the same decision again.  Good luck with your decision.

  • I've read that that only happens in 3-5% of deliveries.  In my situation, baby A was head down and B was horizontal.  The dr. said that they would reassess when baby A came out.  They had an ultrasound machine ready to go and I had an epidural just in case, but he said that all they really needed to be able to do was grab a leg of baby B at the most.  I delivered A, they broke the water for B and pushed on my stomach a little and he just flew into position.  I think that happens a lot - I've read stories like that on this board before.  I had both vaginally and all was fine!  Good Luck!!
  • I was in the same situation and decided to try a vaginal delivery.  I was induced at 38 weeks and ended up having a c-section after being in labor for over 23 hours and not dialating past 3 cm.  I would have tried a vaginal if I progressed to 10 cm though.
  • Do you have to make a decision this early?  My OB/GYN said, since I'd prefer a vaginal delivery, that we won't make the decision until I go into labor since babies have been known to change positions up until the last minute.
  • Thanks for the responses - it helps to know that others were/are in the same boat.

I was surprised too when she asked for a decision this early but a large part of that is scheduling - I am at a very busy hospital.  So in reality, I could schedule the c-section and then see what happens with the babies flipping and/or I could go into labor on my own.

So even though she is asking for a decision there is still some flexibilty.  In all honesty, I am scared to death of either option.

  • My dr was all for having a vaginal delivery so I tried it.I was induced at 36w5d.  Baby A was head down, B was breech. B turned head down after A was delivered. My birth story is in my bio. Honestly I was scared of both options too but my delivery was soooo easy. The most pain I felt the whole day was a 5 on a scale of 1-10. I felt back to normal one week later. It was really not bad at all.

  • For me, baby A (ds) was head-down & baby B (dd) was horizontal, & I had a vaginal delivery. ?Dd got into position after ds was out & was born just 3 minutes after ds! ?If she had not turned head-down, my doctor was willing to do a breech extraction. ?
  • I had a c-section with my twins two weeks ago, both babies were breech.  I had two prior vaginal deliveries with my singletons.  I would have preferred the vaginal delivery over the c-section-the recovery was much easier.  So if you can do vaginal, I'd opt for that.  But, hopefully even if you schedule the c-section, you can still have the option of vaginal if the babies are in a good position to do so.
  • I didnt have an option, both my mine were breech.  the surgery went great and I was on my feet a few hrs after.  I think I would have gone with a c-section either way.
  • I had a vertex Baby A and a Baby B who kept flipping between vertex and breech. The various doctors at my OB practice gave me different answers about how they'd handle it--two said they'd do a C-section, one said she'd do try an external version and if that didn't work she'd do a C-section for Baby B, and two of them (including the MFM) said they could do a breech extraction. I ended up OB-shopping and founda notehr doctor who was comfrtable doing breech extractions, and I ended up being able to vaginally deliver both babies. They were both vertex the night before delivery, but when the OB did the u/s after I pushed out Baby A (which took almost 3 hrs!), Baby B had flipped to breech again and was way up in my ribcage! But the OB quickly did a breech extraction and B was out just 7 minutes after Baby A! I am SO glad I found an OB who could handle breech extractions rather than going for a C-section. My recovery was relatively easy after the first few days and I'm glad my babies and I had the benefits of a vaginal birth.
