Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

infant and toddler carseat positions

I know, I don't know why I am stressing over this but I am. We have an infant now and I have a 20 month old. Where should I put them in our SUV? Would it be best to have the infant behind me and toddler behind passanger? I'm assuming it doesn't matter but just curious if YOU think one is more convientant than the other?

Re: infant and toddler carseat positions

  • We only have one, but I have always thought that I would put the infant on the passenger side and DD behind me, no reason why, I'm curious to see what others say.

Congrats on your new little one :)

  • I don't have two, but my brother and SIL do and then moved the toddler to the passenger side and put the infant in the middle.

  • I just have DD, so she's still in the center, but when we do have another I was planning to put the infant seat behind the passenger seat and DD behind me, since the carrier is going to take up slightly more space and I don't know how comfortable I'd be sitting any closer to the steering wheel than I already do.

  • I can't remember why we decided this way, but we ended up with infant behind passenger, and toddler behind the driver. Like I said, I can't remember why. But it works just fine :-)

It's a little safer on the passenger's side than the driver's side, and while it makes me feel yucky to say it because it sounds like I'm choosing between my kids, we'll put the newborn on the safer side.

Don't feel like you're choosing - this is exactly what car seat techs would recommend because in the event of an accident, the younger child is the one needing more protection.  (geez, it still doesn't sound any better that way, but you know what I mean!)

  • it depends on the car...dh has one on each side and i have the infant in the middle and toddler behind the passenger seat.  i like dh's set up better...it just seems much easier.  the good thing about my set up is that i can see both of them.

  • The middle is the safest spot. Behind the passenger is the 2nd safest spot. So if you can put them side-by-side with the infant in the middle, that'd be the safest thing (but you probably won't be able to use LATCH for both, so the middle will have to be a seatbelt installation).

  • I would check your car's manual on where they recommend placement.  Some cars can't have a seat in the middle.  Also, if you can put them side by side, as PP mentioned, you might only be able to use LATCH for one of them.  My manual instructs me to only use one seat hook per LATCH ring.  And I only have 4 LATCH rings total -- one by each passenger door and one on either side of the middle seat.
