Night feed questions

How did you handle night feeds in the beginning?  Did you both wake up and each take a baby or did you do shifts?  Did you have the babies in your room or theirs?

We have tried neumerous different ways and I'm curious to see what others did.

Re: Night feed questions

  • we're still in the beginning LOL but right now I am doing all of the night feedings (well, 99%) since i am now a SAHM and DH has to get up crazy early for work. ?The babies are in a pack n play next to our bed until they are off their monitors... ?this is the plan for the moment but we'll see how it goes.

  • It all depends on the night.  We try to both do the last feeding around 10:30pm.  Then I get up 3-4 hours later to do that feeding by myself around 1:30-2:30am.  I feed whichever baby is fussing and then wake and feed the other.  Sometimes they are both crying and DH will get up help.  DH gets up at the early morning  5:30ish and does that feeding.  This allows DH to sleep 11pm-5:30 and I sleep 3am-8am.  I also get an hour or two between the late night feeding and the 1:30 am feed.  Let me say that DH is currently home on paternity leave for 12 WEEKS!  I have no idea what I would do if I had to do it all myself.  I really commend you ladies that do!

  • We did all the night feedings together.  DH and I would switch babies every feed so we both got time with each of them.DH kept getting up with me even after he went back to work which I sooo appreciated.

The boys were in their cribs in their room from the time we brought them home from the hospital.  We put a small sofa in their room so we could feed together or alone if we needed to (with the babies propped up on boppies).  Now we use the sofa for story time.

  • We do shifts. I have the babies from 10pm-3am and he has them from 3am-8:30am. Doing shifts was the only way either of us would get any sleep for the first 3 months!
  • I do all the night feeds unless they wake DH up and he feels bad.  Otherwise I let him sleep.  But they are his babies from 5pm to 10pm that is my me time.

  • We also do shifts.  Dh takes from 8-2am and I take over from there.

  • We have been doing the night feedings together. DH makes the bottles ( I am EPing) while I change the babies, then we each feed one & get her back to sleep. Then I have to stay up a little extra to pump...DH will go back to work in a few days, and then every third night DH will not be home all night & I will be on my own as far as overnight feedings (we also have a 20 mos. old toddler who needs to get to bed, etc.) - so we'll see how it goes!!

  • At first, we were doing all the feedings together. Actually, my mom was here so for some feedings she would help me.  Since I try to tandem b/f, I often need DH to help me. But the last couple of nights we've been doing shifts..him until approx 3am and then I take it from there. They've been sleeping longer so its getting a bit easier.

In fact, what am I doing still up? I should be in bed!
