Question about hospital charges

I saw the post below about the large hospital bill.  I guess I assumed my insurance would cover my delivery, with me paying a co-pay. Am I wrong? Sorry if this is a stupid question, and I know it probably depends on my coverage, but I guess I just never thought about leaving with two babies and a whopping bill! Is this typical?

Re: Question about hospital charges

  • I delivered my babies and didnt have to pay a penny,  it just depends on your coverage I guess

  • It depends on your coverage and you can always call your plan and find out what your coverage is.  I have an HMO with Aetna and the most we would pay OOP as a family in one year is $1,500  But co-pays count towards that so I always keep my co-pay receipts.  You should call just to find out what your plan covers sometimes your HR person will know.
  • everyone's insurance is different - even in the same plan- b/c it has to do with what your employer group picks (or you pick for a personal plan).

ie) if we both have Aetna- we can have totally different coverage. The only way to know what you are covered for is to call or look it up in your book they should have given you.

  • It definitely varies widely based on your insurance... we had a per day fee for hospitalization with a 3 day max per visit... so we ended up paying that maximum for each of us (me plus each baby) so we ended up paying 9 times the per-day fee... if that makes sense.

  • don't worry, that was just my husband's sucky insurance. had i known the copay per baby per day (up to 3) was going to be $500, i would have put them on my insurance, which was only $200 per day. oh well.

  • We didn't pay anything and Anna stayed in the NICU for 3 weeks and had 3 surgeries within that time.

  • We have not yet received our bill, but we are covered completely for everything, we just have to pay our daily $100 co-pay. My dr office checked our insurance coverage after my first visit so we knew what to expect.
