Hourly pay for Mother's Helper?

I am seeking to hire a mother's helper part time for just a couple hours a day (for dinner time to toddler's 7:30 bedtime), only a couple times a week. I have newborn twin girls and a 20 month old toddler.  What is the going hourly rate for a mother's helper?  If it matters, I live in a suburb of NYC.  TIA

Re: Hourly pay for Mother's Helper?

  • I hired one when my twins were 14m old & I lived just outside of Seattle. ?I placed an ad on craigslist offering $10-12/hr. & ended up paying my fabulous mother's helper $11/hr. (I always thought that if I ever had a situation where I left her alone w/them, I'd give her $12/hr.). ?She had experience working in a daycare & had done TONS of babysitting & her references loved her. ?I reserved $10/hr. for someone w/o much experience. ?Check other ads from your area on cragslist to see what they're offering.

  • I have 3 college girls that we use - we have someone for about 5 hour every day.  We only pay $8 per hour, but they are never alone with the boys - they are just helping us out.  Plus, I live in a very cheap state!
  • my niece only asks for $5 and hour ;) i'm in NJ - she's a steal - but we never leave her totally alone with DS  -we are always in the house/yard when she's here... she doesn't know how to change diapers- and frankly- if she tried to change DS's poopy diaper i think there would be crap all over the place b/c he squirms so much :)

we hire her when we need to clean the garage, yard work, etc.

  • My college age sister gets $12/hour at school (Champaign, IL) and $12-15/hr in Chicago. Ask some friends, check the local board, or look at Craigslist to get an idea. I think these things vary so much from state to state (another friend gets $30/hr in LA!)
  • I live in Silicon Valley, in California.

A high school girl I know charges $5 an hour. ?I pay my community college student mother's helper $9/hr and my almost-college-graduate mother's helper $10/hr (their numbers). ?I think this is cheap for where I live, though.
