What's the difference between an Ipod and MP3 player?

DH has been wanting an Ipod but is that the same thing as an MP3 player but made by a different company? Circuit City has the Sony Mp3 for $49.99 tomorrow but the Ipod is $149.99. There looks to be a difference in Gb's 4 vs 8. He will only be using it to mow, and work out pretty much so I'm wondering if the MP3 player would work just a good for a 1/3 of the price?

Just a note--MOST MP3 players work with PCs only. So if you only use Mac computers at home, you only have a few non-iPod options to choose from. We HAD to get an iPod because we only use Macs and the other MP3 player we got that was Mac compatible (it was an Insignia or something from Best Buy) didn't work.

um ok? I have no idea what type of computer (mac etc..)  we have I do know it's an HP laptop with Windows Vista does that make a difference? Please don't laugh I am so behind in technology.

OK if it's an HP, it's a PC which means you have MANY more options for MP3 players! I've heard good reviews about the SanDisk Sansa. Might be worth looking into...

Thanks! I was going to order something online before the DH gets home at 4pm. However I am so lost on what all accessories he might need, I think I may have to sneak away one day and just go to Circuit City and get some help!

I second the sansa.  There's no need to get an ipod.  All you need is a charger and headphones.  I bought a cheap one from Target for $10 - 1GB memory (250 songs) and use it to work out.  That way I'm not overly worried about losing it or breaking it - it was only $10.

I have a 16gb Creative Zen mp3/video player. LOVE it. Got it for about $200, plus it has an expandable memory. So if I wanted to get a memory card and put that in, I could easily double my memory.

I don't think Ipod's have that capability.
